Not the best on tap in the MLS this weekend, as the two worst teams in their respective conferences, Chivas and D.C United, prepare to do battle in the ESPN game of the week on Sunday night.

The Goats (5-11-4) may have the slight edge here in the initial look as United has just one win this season on the road beating the Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field back in early June.

Now with 10 games remaining in the season, Justin Braun, Mariano Trujillo and Alan Gordon prepare for their rematch against an unpredictable United squad.

Chivas fell to D.C. on the road in May, in back-and-forth match that saw United take a 3-2 win after an 89th-minute penalty kick goal from former Goat, team captain Carey Talley. You can bet that Chivas will be looking to even the season series at the Home Depot Center in Southern California, a place where they are 3-4-2 with a win and a tie in their last two matches.

Meanwhile, United (4-14-3) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on a week ago Sunday. Danny Allsopp scored twice in an uncharacteristic offensive outburst for a side that won for the first time in three games under interim coach Ben Olsen. They had not won in eight matches, scoring just three goals. Andy Najar set up Allsopp’s third and fourth goals of the season in the 22nd and 63rd minutes.

The Goats are coming off another disappointing defeat giving up a late goal at Dallas FC for a 1-0 loss amid sweltering 102-degree weather. While Chivas enjoyed the territorial advantage through a scoreless first half, Dallas began to gradually take over in the second by maintaining extended periods of ball control and eventually striking the game-winning goal.

What will make this match interesting will be how the clubs will deal with roster changes in an effort to preserve some fresh legs for US Open Cup semifinal matches next Tuesday evening: D.C. United at Columbus and Chivas USA at Seattle. With a 2010 postseason appearance a long shot for both clubs, Sunday’s game may see a few lineup changes.

Prediction: Both sides are in desperate need of points in an effort to salvage any hope for a postseason bid, and if anything the pride of not finishing last in their conference. Allsop has been in fine form lately and the lofty Australian will be more then a handful for Chivas USA’s center backs Umana and Delgado.

It will be a battle of size versus teamwork as the Goats defenders try to shut down United’s veteran striker.

I expect DC to surprise Chivas with a rare 1-0 win on the road.
