Manchester United are off to its worst start to a season since the 2001-02 campaign and now face a Sunderland side unbeaten at home this season.

However, United have won on their last four League trips to the Stadium of Light, beating the Black Cats 1-0 and drawing 2-2 at Old Trafford a season ago.

Sunderland is coming off a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and will be looking to crack the top 10 on the table with a win or draw against the Red Devils on Saturday.

Black Cats’ boss, Steve Bruce faces his former mentor in the knowledge that in 15 previous managerial confrontations with Sir Alex Ferguson he has yet to win, drawing three and losing 12.

There are a lot of issues swirling around the Sunderland camp starting with Bruce’s surprising announcement that he will start back up goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in place of first choice keeper Craig Gordon. This is an interesting decision, as Gordon seems to have better control over the Sunderland defense, and they play a lot better with him.

This could prove a risky move as the Sunderland defense are already lean being without former United midfielder turned a defender, Kieran Richardson, along with John Mensah, as well as midfielder David Meyler, and striker Fraizer Campbell.

United however, are not without their own problems, with star striker Wayne Rooney out with an ankle problem, as well as midfield maestro Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Antonio Valencia, and Owen Hargreaves.

Several sources have speculated that Rooney will return for this weekend’s match but nothing has been confirmed at the time of this writing.

The 24-year old has yet to score from open play for Man U this season and, after having played a key role in United’s title challenge in the last campaign, there has been plenty of talk about his dip in form.

The Red Devils have conceded seven goals in their last three Premier League games, but in reply, they have netted eight and taken five points and are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League games going back to April, when Chelsea beat them at home.

This is a big match for Untied as a win could leapfrog them to the top if Arsenal were to beat Chelsea who currently sits atop the table, in their meeting on Sunday.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Sunderland’s strategy will be to opt for a possession game, and make sure United can’t get into their stride. If they are successful, this will likely end in a 1-all draw.
