Sunderland return home after a 3-0 drubbing of current reigning champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and will now focus its attention on ending a 12-match losing streak against Everton on Monday.

However, the Black Cats, who currently sit in seventh on the league table, have been known for following up great performances against the Premier League’s elite by struggling against lesser opponents in their next match.

Nevertheless, they are unbeaten at home this season and confidence could be a momentum shifter as they face an Everton side that is winless in it last three and sits 16th on the league table, just one point from the drop zone.

The side will be further buoyed by the return of top scorer Darren Bent, 8 goals (6 league), although the recent form of record signing Asamoah Gyan, 6 goals (5 league), and on loan forward Danny Welbeck leaves a question of where Bent will be slotted. The 19-year old Welbeck had an impressive outing against Chelsea last week, while Gyan has performed magnificently for an injured Bent.

Meanwhile, Everton have lost only four of its last 24 Premier League matches dating to last season, but are winless in their last three outings including 2-1 defeat at home to Arsenal, a loss that brought their seven-match unbeaten run to an end.

With a 2010-11 season record of 3-6-4, including just one league victory, the Toffees are currently sitting just one point from relegation. They are fourth-worst in goals scored and have had little scoring production from its strikers who have managed a combined total of just two Premier League strikes so far this season.

If not for the play of Aussie midfielder Tim Cahill, who has scored four goals in his last seven league appearances and leads the club with six league goals, Everton could very well be sitting in the drop zone.

Regardless, the Toffees will be beaming with hope as the head to the Stadium of Light, a place where they have won on four of their last five visits and enjoyed their joint-biggest Premier League win against any team when they beat Sunderland 7-1 in November 2007.

Look for Sunderland to bolster its attack to increase its goal scoring production with an aggressive style that will include the three-man strike force of Bent, Welbeck, and Gyan. The defense has looked solid apart from the disaster at Newcastle, so they should have very little problems containing Everton’s lackluster offensive attack.

I expect a close low scoring affair in this one. The ‘Cats have kept clean sheets in their last three home matches while netting just a single goal in their last five Premier League games against Everton, while the Toffees have not scored over two goals in a single match since October 17.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Sunderland 2 –Everton 1
