Top table Manchester United still holds a seven-point lead on second place Arsenal heading into this weekend’s home match against a seventh place Everton side who are unbeaten in their last seven Barclay’s Premier League matches.

With just five matches remaining, the Toffees are just two points behind Liverpool and still have a shot at grabbing the final Europa or Champions League qualifying spot. The club is having a far better season than last year when Everton lumbered out the starting gate, but thanks to great games at the end of the campaign finished 8th on the table.

The 2010-11 season is playing out much the same way as the team hovered in 19th spot early on, and then moved to 15th before rapidly rising to where they are now in the last six weeks of Premier League play.

They posted a 2-0 win their last time out beating Blackburn on second-half goals from Leon Osman and Leighton Baines. Everton were unchanged from the side that thrashed Wolves 3-0 just a week before as keeper Tim Howard recorded his second consecutive clean sheet.

Meanwhile, United has a chance to maintain their lead on the Gunners by snatching a home victory at Old Trafford, a place where they are W15 D1 L0, and is the only side remaining without a home loss this season. The last time United lost points at home was against West Brom on October 16 2010.

After a draw at St. James Park against Newcastle in their last outing, where both Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and the League’s leading scorer Dimitar Berbatov where held scoreless. Manchester United, mathematically speaking, needs to gather 12 points in the remaining five matches if they want to be 100 percent sure that they will be successful in seeking a record 19th English league title.

The first time these two sides met this season, they played to a thrilling 3-3 draw after being knotted up 1-1 at the break. However, United lead 3-1 until the 90th minute, when Tim Cahill scored to make it 3-2 followed by Mikel Arteta’s equalizer in the 93rd minute.

Everton has never achieved victory on Old Trafford, since the inception of the Premier League in 1992. Their record reads W0 D3 L14, where the last draw was in 2005.

Still, United cannot afford to make more mistakes. The squad has a flimsy lead, and awaits two games against Arsenal at Emirates, and against 3rd place Chelsea at home. On top of that, the team has to pay a visit to Schalke in Germany for the semi-final of Champions League.

This is a must-win, and I am sure Sir Alex Ferguson’s men will be up to the task. Look for Chicharito and Berbatov to get back on form helping the Red Devils to three points.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Manchester United 2, Everton 0
