Chelsea need a win to reignite their push to retain the Premier League title when kick off against Bolton a side that are unbeaten in their last 14 meetings, home and away, winning 11 and drawing three, on Monday afternoon at Reebok Stadium.

The Blues have struggled early on this season and sit fourth on the league table tied with Tottenham for the final Champions League spot. The 2-0 win over Blackburn last Saturday was the side’s second victory in 10 Premier League games. The other win was against Bolton, at Stamford Bridge, in the last game of 2010 when a second half goal from Florent Malouda earned Chelsea an important win.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers are in seventh position and are playing well. A win on Monday could leapfrog them into the top four on the table. However, they will need to reverse their current trend against the Pensioners, a club they have failed to beat in their last 15 meetings in all competitions. They last beat Chelsea in December 2003, at Stamford Bridge and have not won a league game at home against them since October 1997.

Bolton have also failed to score in their last seven home games against Chelsea, making it the longest run of any host team without a goal against an opponent in Premier League history. They also haven’t kept a clean sheet against Chelsea in their last 20 Premier League meetings.

The Blues should be confident given their Premier League record against Bolton and that could bode well for the talisman Frank Lampard who has scored seven goals in his last 11 Premier League appearances against the Wanderers.

Lampard could provide the spark his squad needs snapping their current losing streak, as the Pensioners have won none and lost four of their last six Premier League away games. He will be aided by fiery striker Didier Drogba, the team’s leading goal scorer (8G, 8 A), along with Malouda who has created the most chances for the Blues this season (72), and Kevin Davies who has created the most scoring opportunities from open play (56).

Chelsea will still be without Yuri Zhirkov (calf), Alex (knee) and Yossi Benayoun (Achilles).

As for the Wanderers, they will need a strong upfront outing from Swedish forward Johan Elmander who leads the side in goals (9) and Kevin Davies, while relying on veteran center-back Gary Cahill to anchor a solid backline in an attempt to slow down the Blues’ Drogba and Malouda.

Bolton will test Ivan Klasnic, who has missed three games with a groin strain, while Gretar Steinsson (knee), Ricardo Gardner (knee), Jloyd Samuel (calf), and Sean Davis (knee) are still missing.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Overall, in 23 Premier League meetings with the Wanderers, Chelsea have won 15, drawn five, and lost only three. Even though Chelsea has won just 12 of their 38 points away from home, I expect the Blues to eke out a much-needed three-points from a 1-0 win in this one.
