The stage is set, as a war of words stoked the already mounting tensions early this week just days before the Premier League’s top two teams kick off in an epic battle on Monday at Old Trafford.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger refused to comment on Manchester United defender Patrice Evra’s comment that likened the Gunners to a “football training center”. Evra has been critical of Arsenal in the past, and its so-called inability to bring home the hardware.

But these riffs are nothing new as there’s has been a lot of bad blood brewing between these two sides going back to a feud between Wenger and United’s Sir Alex Ferguson.

Now the two most decorated managers in England will go head-to-head for the 40th time, as the Gunners, whose 49-game unbeaten run at Old Trafford was ended six years ago by United, try to return the favor by ending the Red Devils own 20-game unbeaten streak.

Aresnal have won four of its last five matches and have arguably the league’s most in-form player, Samir Nasri. The Frenchman is the team’s scoring leader with eight league goals and has emerged as Arsenal’s Hercules. His rise to recent form could not have come at a better time for the Gunners who have been riddled with injuries, and have had to deal with the absence of leaders like captain Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie, and defenders Johan Djourou, Laurent Koscielny, and Thomas Vermaelen.

Meanwhile, United boast the Premier League’s top scorer, Dimitar Berbatov who has netted 11 goals so far this season. The Bulgarian striker scored five times as Manchester United beat the Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford, 7-1 in their last league outing.

The Gunners will mark Berbatov with corporeal midfielder Alex Song who has added to the physicality in the middle of the pitch for Arsenal, and has played a crucial role in breaking up the opposition attacks while slotting into the center of defense if needed. He is also a calm passer and launches a lot of attacks with some skilful distribution.

In return, the Red Devils will shadow Portuguese winger Nani with Gael Clichy. Nani is quick and tricky and provides a lot of the danger for the Gunners. In terms of pace, Clichy can certainly match up and his fullback partner Bacary Sagna may also be called into action to help out.

United are likely to miss Paul Scholes while Antonia Valencia, Owen Hargreaves, and Michael Owen are still out while Rio Ferdinand is a doubt

Last season the Red Devils took both matches 2-1 and 3-1. Arsenal has only won one game in their last nine against Man United – a 2-1 victory in 2008.

With that, one might expect the Gunners to struggle to overcome United, but Wenger’s men are on a roll and holding a one-point lead atop the leader board has to construct some confidence. You might expect Arsenal to play for the draw in this one, making it a low scoring affair.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Manchester United 2, Arsenal 1
