Arsenal will hope that history repeats itself as it attempts to extend its 11-Premier League match-winning streak at Villa Park, a place where they have not lost since December of 1998, when they kick off against bottom half Aston Villa in a Saturday matinee.

The Gunners has drawn six and won five against their top-flight counterparts who has yet to lose at home, though Gerard Houllier’s team have drawn more home games, four, than they have won (3). The Villans have struggled this season and are 13th on the table, just four points from the drop zone. They have won just two out of their nine Premier League games, at Wolves and at home to Blackpool.

As for Arsenal, they have won 14 points away from home, from 21, with only one defeat away from the Emirates. They will look to extend their two-game away win streak after back-to-back home losses to Newcastle and last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham. It is the first time the Gunners have registered two consecutive home losses in nearly 13 years.

The journey to Birmingham could be a chance for Arsenal, who sits third, just two points behind second place Man U and league leaders Chelsea, to grab a valuable three points and leapfrog atop the league table.

Just in time for its road trip, the Gunners brings back strikers Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin after being rested for Tuesday night’s Champions League game at Braga. However, they will be without captain Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Eboue following their 2-0 midweek defeat in Portugal.

That will leave them thin defensively, so more pressure could be put on 18-year-old Jack Wilshere who struggled in Braga as well as Samir Nasri has also filled in for the captain and could be asked to do so once again along with leading goal scorer, Marouane Chamakh.

Meanwhile, Robert Pires, who left Arsenal in 2006 and returned to the Premier League last week, will meet his former employer in his full debut. The 37-year-old scored 84 goals in 284 appearances for Arsenal, and was part of the “Invincibles” side that won the domestic double in the 2003-04 season.

Pires will be expected to bolster the Villans’ attack with his ability to pick holes with his passing in the opposition’s defense. But can Villa get enough of the ball to him to do so?

With a lot of the focus on Pires, one cannot forget the key matchup in this one to be Villa’s multi-million pound striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, versus the Gunners’ Laurent Koscielny. Villa’s English striker has yet to regain his scoring touch after being hampered by various injury setbacks.

The Villans has proven in its previous home game against Manchester United that they have the capability to disrupt a team’s rhythm.

However, with last year’s a nil-nil draw at Villa Park, followed by a 3-0 drubbing of the Villans at the Emirates, combined with the fact that Arsenal have lost just three of their 18 Premier League visits to Villa Park. I expect the Gunners to take away three points in this one.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Arsenal 1–Aston Villa 0
