That will be exactly the case when the USA takes on Ghana in an exciting opener on June 16, at Estadio da Dunasm in Natal.

Ghana arrives in Brazil four years after shocking the football world in South Africa 2010, where the they advanced to the quarters finals for the first time in its history of World Cup appearances, before being knocked out on penalties by Uruguay.

The Black Stars nearly won that match, but a laser from Asamoah Gyan hit the bar from the spot in the final seconds of stoppage time.

Since then, Ghana has continued to improve, and have carved its spot amongst Africa’s elite with fourth-place finishes in the last two African Cup of Nations.

Still, the Black Stars have yet to claim any hardware on the world stage, but look poised to make a charge this summer after making it through to the finals, beating Egypt in the final round of playoffs.

Boss Akwasi Appiah’s squad will have their hands full with the Americans though, who are a squad of highly-skilled individuals who can win games on their own.

The Stars and Stripes however, need to play as a group if they are too make it past the group stage, and how they do that against a speedy Ghana side will likely determine their tournament fate.

The US reached the knockout rounds four years ago, and will aim to repeat, especially having topped their qualifying group.

Coach Jurgen Klinsmann knows his team’s strength resides in its offense attack, and he will rely heavily on veterans Clint Dempsey and Chris Wondolowski, both of whom have the experience and ability to break down defenses — a place where the Black Stars are most vulnerable.

Heading into the tournament, Ghana appear to have an abundance of attacking and midfield talent, but its back line could be a problem. That’s because their offensive tactics often leave their defense exposed.

Prediction – USA –

Ghana has won on each of the four times they have done battle with the Americans, including the last two World Cups. Nevertheless, USA’s never-say-die mind-set always makes them a formidable opponent.

Despite their past World Cup difficulties, I expect the Americans experience and attack to give the Black Stars’ defense something to be concern about.
