There is perhaps no other team in the world that leans on one player as much as Portugal does on Ronaldo, and a perfect example of this was during their playoff match against Sweden, when Ronaldo single-handily beat the Swedes on a pivotal hat trick that sent his side through.

Since then Portugal’s skipper has taken it upon himself to score big goals at the right time, and helped his squad to a humiliating 5-1 victory in a friendly with Cameroon, notching two goals.

But it’s not just the play of Ronaldo that will be needed to get Portugal past the Germans, all of Paulo Bento’s men will need to be at their very best if they are to come out victorious.

They will need midfielders Joao Moutinho and Miguel Veloso to create chances for those ahead of them, while neutralizing the German midfield, to ensure it doesn’t cause too much damage on the other end.

But that’s not all Portugal will have to worry about in their match with the Germans, who enter the World Cup final in good form, having dropped just two points in qualifying.

Boss Joachim Low’s side is largely based around the side that won the European under-21 championships in 2009, with Mesut Ozil, Mats Hummels and Manuel Neuer all playing in this summer’s tournament. That will bring a lot energy and stamina to the table. But besides that, Germany also has plenty of experience too, with the likes of captain Philipp Lahm and Bayern Munich start Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The side backed up its impressive qualifying matches that saw them draw against Italy and triumph over England and Chile in their recent friendly outings.

Now the Germans embark on their World Cup journey beginning play with a Portuguese side that they have held the edge over, beating them at the 2006 World Cup, as well as at the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

However, Portugal did grab a victory over Germany in a Euro 2000 meeting.

Betting Prediction: Germany

With almost all of their players currently competing in top European leagues, Portugal definitely has the goods to compete against their European rivals.

But the Germans won’t be afraid of their opponents, and despite been drawn in a difficult group, will beat Portugal here, laying down a benchmark for the rest of the competition.
