Honduras was completely overmatched by France in their opener while Ecuador played well and nearly pulled an upset in their first game of the tournament – a 2-1 eventual loss to Switzerland.
Honduras had a miserable time against France in the opener. Not only were they totally outclassed in the game, but they were forced to play with 10 men after Wilson Palacios was sent off.
Somewhat questionable tactics were the order of the day in their opener – let’s hope that Honduras doesn’t revert to their dirty ways against a team that they should be far more competitive against.
Palacios could be a difference maker for this team assuming that his head is screwed on straight Friday. He is one of the few on the team with what can be described as world class talent. That said the Hondurans will have to find some offense – the only time one of their players scored in their opener was on their own net! The Honduras defense SHOULD be OK with Maynor Figueroa defending.

But it doesn’t matter how well the Hondurans defend, it will be how much/how little they score that determines the outcome.
Not lost on Honduras is the fact that this could be their best chance for a result at the 2014 World Cup. They will play hard – maybe too hard!
Ecuador played well and maybe have deserved a point against heavy favorite Switzerland but a late goal sunk their chances. There are some serious players on the squad – Enner Valencia scored Ecuador’s only goal and seems to be inspired as he plays for his friend Christian Benitez who died suddenly last year.
He and Antonio Valencia who is the biggest name on this team give Ecuador credibility and hand the slight edge over to Ecuador ahead of this match.
The key for Ecuador is to stay poised and to shrug off a goal in the 92nd minute that prevented them from gaining a point against Switzerland. Honduras plays hard and their sketchy aggression has a knack of getting under people’s skin. Ecuador got a little emotional against Switzerland which cost them – they won’t make that mistake again.

These teams have played each other 13 times with eight of those games ending in a draw. In the other five games, Ecuador has a slight 3-2 advantage.
It’s hard not to like what we saw from Ecuador in their first game while it is difficult to find anything to like about Honduras’s first game. Ecuador is simple the better team on paper and on the pitch. Honduras’s aggression may be their undoing Friday as Ecuador takes advantage of a couple of the many free kicks they will likely have.
