The Netherlands will be out to avenge a terrible Euro 2012 tournament while Spain will be after their fourth straight Major International tournament win – a victory in the opener will go a long way silencing some critics and gaining a little momentum for the month long event.

Spain enters the tournament ranked #1 in the world for good reason – they have dominated International football for the past 10 years (outside of last year’s Confederation Cup in Brazil).

Spain has a tremendous mix of experience, youth, explosiveness, style and swagger – until someone knocks them off their perch they will deservedly carry around this confidence.

Spain’s ability to maintain possession should be on full display here – they are built to possess!

With talent up and down the pitch, there is no reason to think that they won’t come up with one of their patented hot starts in an international competition.

Their opposition in the opener gave them fits in the Final of the last World Cup but this is another year, this is the Group stage and this is the time when Spain typically makes a huge statement.

The Netherlands were terrific in qualifying with a +29 goal differential but a look at the teams they faced in the lead-up to the tournament shows the lack of class that they had to face – none of their opponents was even ranked in the top 30 in the world.

Still, veterans like Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar are there as classy leaders and the youth of the team is represented by the terrific Memphis Depay and defenders Daley Blind and Daryl Janmaat.

Simply put, the Dutch are no pushovers and should be right in the mix to move on to the knock-out stage of the tournament.

The Netherlands’ defense could be the biggest question mark for this team ahead of 2014. They are a youngish bunch – not as experienced on the world stage as one would hope with Spain staring you in the face. The Dutch should be OK the rest of the tournament but the defenders will be in for a serious challenge right off the bat.

Betting Prediction

Spain vs. the Netherlands may be the best of the opening matches at World Cup 2014. Spain is still the team to beat not only in Group B but in the tournament – look for them to make their usual statement early on and dispatch the Netherlands.

Spain’s possession game will be too much for the young defense – until someone knocks the Spaniards for their perch, I will take them at -118. This looks every bit like a 2-0 or 2-1 game!
