Manchester United: 2011 Team Preview | EPL Betting Odds

Matt Martz weighs in with Barclays Premier League 2011 futures betting article on Manchester United. This year, the most glaring weakness for the club is how Man U declined to answer it’s lack of depth between the sticks…

English Premier League – Man. United 2011 Preview

The defending Premiership champions Manchester United are coming back as strong as ever, but many still doubt their ability to win it all again. The team has been quiet for the majority of the transfer season, and it has yet to be seen if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Despite virtually no change to last year’s roster, the side does have some questions.

The most glaring being how the club declined to answer it’s lack of depth between the sticks.

Although keeper Edwin van der Sar was more than adequate in goal while being an important piece of the team’s title run last year, conceding just 32 goals in his 33 total league games. It remains to be seen if the 40-yeard old can keep up the pace, matching his stats from last season while remaining injury free.

While the Red Devils are stacked with second choice keepers, Tomasz Kuszczak is the only one with any substantial playing time, recording just four Premier starts in as many season with United. If the Red Devils should lose van der Sar to injury, it could spell out big problems for an inexperienced keeper klatch.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils picked up defender Phil Jones from the Blackburn Rovers. The 19-year old defender will add depth to an already solid back line that boasts the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Chris Smalling. The Chorley-born youngster appeared at right-back during United’s recent tour of the United States, which could be another useful for the Red Devils this season. [ad-3678122]

Despite not having a clear-cut starter at the central midfield position, the team’s midfield overall is one of the strongest in the EPL with players like Nani (nine goals and 14 assists in 33 total league games) and Antonio Valencia leading the way.

Valencia needs to see more playing to though as he could grow into one of the better players at his position if he is given ample time to cultivate his game.

That engine room will power a Red Devils lethal offensive front that needed a league-best 78 goals in 2010.

Although only scoring 11 goals in 2010, striker Wayne Rooney is a versatile player, powerful and strong on the ball, his ability to pick a pass, shoot from distance and unselfishly work for the team is unparalleled in world football.

He is aided by two of the most talented and promising players in Javier Hernandez (12 goals in 27 total league games) and Dimitar Berbatov (20 goals in 31 total league games).

Matt’ s Man Utd Prediction:

The team expects nothing short of a Premiership Championship, and there aren’t many reasons to think otherwise. They have every piece needed to make it a rematch with Barcelona for the Champions League title, and if that wasn’t the case, I’d be surprised.

While the odds don’t necessarily make for a huge payout here, the likelihood of cashing out is good with this safe bet.
