From the Coach

Analysis from the coach: “We had to work hard to qualify, especially in the games in Montevideo. Luckily for us, though, the World Cup’s taking place far away from home! I know we have to improve a lot if we are to perform well in South Africa but we do have a lot of strong points and we hope to be able to show them.” Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez

After having made just two appearances in the last five FIFA World Cup finals, the two-time World Cup winners defeated Costa Rica in a two-match playoff during the final stage of the qualification process to advance to the World Cup for an 11th time.

La Celeste are far removed from their best years as a world football power having failed to advance beyond the last 16 since the 1970 tournament in Mexico.

But the Uruguayans have a renewed hope as 62-year old boss Oscar Tabarez, who is know as El Maestro in his homeland, certainly has the resources to advance beyond the group phase and into the knockout rounds for the first time in two decades.

Tabarez, now in his second stint as national coach, having taken the Uruguayans through to the last 16 at Italy 1990, has a squad that is loaded with talent from some of Europe’s premiere major leagues.

Los Charrúa’s have a side that is balanced with youth as well as veteran standouts and are led by a player that has no trouble finding the back of the net — Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan. Forlan won the Pichichi award for top scorer in La Liga last season, as well the European Golden Shoe.

Forlan will be paired with forward Luis Suarez from Ajax Amsterdam fame. Suarez and Forlan combined for 12 goals in the qualifiers and can strike fear into any goalkeeper. Finally, there is captain and central defender Diego Lugano who likes to combine his defensive duties with often-profitable forays into the opposing penalty box. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Uruguay finished fifth in the ten-team qualifying group, and could have secured automatic seeding by beating Argentina in the final game of CONMEBOL qualifying, but lost 1-0 and instead had to face a play-off against CONCACAF’s Costa Rica, which La Celeste won 2-1 over two legs. In the group phase Uruguay collected 24 points and scored 28 goals, the third highest behind Brazil and Chile.

Skipper Diego Lugano scored the game winner in match one in San Jose while Sebastian Abreu netted the equalizer in the second.

Uruguay will need a solid outing against France and will need to win against South Africa with Mexico posing the greatest threat to La Celeste.

Group A is tough but Uruguay probably has the most fearsome strikers, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they were to top the group.

I expect Uruguay to advance to the round of 16 even thought some may think their chances have faded.
