The Netherlands returns to the World Cup finals as one of the perennial favorites to win the entire tournament in South Africa this summer. Die Oranje win a lot of games but have very few pieces of hardware to show for it. The side has made it to the WC finals twice — losing 2-1 to West Germany in 1974 and 3-1 in extra-time to Argentina in 1978.

Few teams can match in terms of overall skill, but the and pressure in World Cups always seems to get the best of the Dutch when it matters most.

Since the retirement of pioneering coach Rinus Michels, and the recent departure of Marco van Basten, the Netherlands hope to become a bride rather than a bridesmaid in 2010 under new boss Bert van Marwijk, who took over in the wake of their disappointing UEFA EURO 2008 campaign.

The 56-year-old led Rotterdam to the UEFA Cup trophy in 2002, and spent two-years at the helm with Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Assistant coaches Phillip Cocu and Frank de Boer, both who were former Dutch footballers will flank him. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Die Oranje have a multitude of players that easily punched their ticket to South Africa. They are led by winger Arjen Robben and the steady influence of midfielders Rafael van der Vaart and Mark van Bommel of Bayern Munich. Up top, Arsenal hitman Robin van Persie and Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt provide all sorts of problems for any opposing defenses.

Other notables are Joris Mathijsen, Andre Ooijer, and captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst who leads the current side with 97 international caps.

The Dutch were flawless in qualifying, picking up eight wins from eight games, to top a very easy qualifying group in order to get into the tournament.

The last team to reach a FIFA World Cup final without dropping a single point in qualifying – West Germany in 1982, who fell to Italy 3-1 in the final. Norway and Scotland were the only real threat the squad faced.

As it happened, the Dutch conceded just two goals throughout the entire campaign against Iceland and FYR Macedonia, while netting two of their 17 efforts to secure slim but controlled 1-0 victories in Glasgow and Oslo.

The Oranje look on paper to have all the necessary ingredients necessary to go far. Die Oranje will need to work out of the group stage if they are going to make any noise, something they should do quite handily.

First of all: it isn’t ‘Die Oranje’, just ‘Oranje’

But more important. Where is the name of starplayer Wesley Sneijder. He led Inter Milan into the finals of the Uefa Championsleague this year and possible make them win the championship of Italie and the Italian Cup also this year. He is one of the best playmakers in the game. Alongside Robben and Van Persie he will be the keyplayer to make the Dutch Quad a serious candidate to win the World Cup.

Peter from The Netherlands

PS . Andre Ooijer had a poor season with PSV Eindhoven. Possibly he will be left out of the squad and definitely will not be one of the first 11.

Peter,

These are merely predictions as the Lords of FIFA have ruled that rosters are to be finalized for the World Cup by May 15,. Until then the final sides are in flux.

This is why Andre Ooijer is listed as merely a notable here.

In regards to Sneijder. He has been fighting a left thigh muscle strain since the latter part of April and limped off the pitch against Roma in the early stages of Wednesday night’s Coppa Italia final. Despite optimistic reports on his return,
nagging injuries could dilute his effectiveness in the WC.

The injury of Sneijder is not THAT serious that it would dilute his effectiveness at the WC. He is the starplayer of our country. So he should always be mentioned Also Robben (many injuries during his career), Van der Vaart (seriously injured at this moment )and Van Persie (has been out for 5 months, just recovered for 1 week) could be placed in the same category as Sneijder.

Huntelaar will be one of the 23 players in the squad. For sure! At this moment he is a regular in the first 11 of Milan the last months. But not quite very week. He is not in his best form. But still quite good though! A few weeks training with the other boys from the Dutch squad will make him razorsharp again!

“The injury of Sneijder is not THAT serious that it would dilute his effectiveness at the WC. ”

Well, Sneijder suffered a hematoma confirmed on Inter’s official website.
Hematomas can reduce mobility of a member and present roughly the same symptoms as a fracture. Sounds a little serious I would think. With WC action starting in roughly four weeks, it is very possible that he will not be 100 percent.

The hematoma that Wesley is suffering is just a severe bruising not a so called fracture hematoma (a break in the blood vessel) . He is just a few days out. He has been treated with physioherapy.
