After stunning the futbol world by winning the UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal, their first major international trophy at any level, Greece followed up by missing the 2006 World Cup. Now they have once again proven they have the will to compete on the word stage by earning their place in the World Cup finals for only the second time in its history.

It was back in 1994 that Greece reached its first-ever World Cup in the USA, but finished the tournament in last place.

The Galanoleyki’s are under the direction of Greek futbol legend –defensive-minded German boss Otto Rehhagel. “King Otto” as his countrymen call him, has enjoyed the kind of fame most often only bestowed upon royalty after the Greeks victory on Portuguese soil. But his failure to reach Germany 2006 and an early group-stage exit at EURO 2008, has increased the pressure on the German maestro.

Otto will have no shortage of experience when the squad hits the pitch in South Africa in June.

Among them is veteran defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who played more qualifying minutes than any other squad member as well as former Inter Milan and Benfica midfielder Karagounis.

The two are rounded out nicely with steady players like Angelos Charisteas, Georgios Samaras and Theofanis Gekas. Finally, Vasilis Torosidis is one to keep an eye on.

The 24-year old Olympiakos defender has also shown his versatility by sometimes playing in the midfield.

Greece’s World Cup qualifying campaign started with victories over Luxembourg, Latvia and Moldova. After out scoring their opponents eight to none, the Greeks finally succumbed to their first loss in Group 2 losing at home to Switzerland, 2-1. They rebounded quickly picking up four points from their double-header against Israel, drawing 1-1 away and winning 2-1 at home.

Then as fate would have it, they would face Switzerland once more with the same results, falling 2-0 on Swiss soil. After drawing 1-1 in Moldova, Otto rallied his troops as they pounded Latvia 5-2 and clinched a play-off spot with a 2-1 win against Luxembourg.

Finally, after winning their playoff series 1-0 on aggregate against the Ukraine, Greece was awarded one of the final UEFA World Cup spots

Under Otto, the Greeks have mastered the art of the 1-0, defensive game. With their counter attacking style they will be tough to beat, even in a group in which their opponents have superior attacking talent.

The key for Greece to advance out of the group will be a strong backline and finishing their goal scoring opportunities.
