Being one of the oldest national teams and considered by most to be the home of modern football as we known it, it would seem that England would have hoisted more World Cup hardware over the years.

However, their only crowning achievement was a 1966 World Cup triumph on home soil. Since then England has failed to win a major international tournament and hasn’t even reached a final.

The Three Lions came up short at UEFA EURO 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, so winning South Africa 2010 may well be the last chance of international silverware for some of the world’s most renowned players.

New boss Fabio Capello, winner of Serie A with AC Milan, AS Roma and Juventus, as well as a two-time La Liga champion at Real Madrid, brings a much-needed sense of urgency back to a squad full of egos that at times has displayed a lackluster attitude at critical moments.

The Italian disciplinarian has instilled a new work ethic that was prominently displayed after England qualified for South Africa 2010 with two games to spare.

The English side is loaded with talent and leading the way is Manchester United super striker, Wayne Rooney.

The England international, who has scored 34 goals in all competitions this season for United, has shaken off an ankle injury and will shoulder a majority the offensive load for the Three Lions. He will get some help in the midfield from two of footballs leading set up men, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

The backline will be anchored by Chelsea skipper John Terry and centre back Rio Ferdinand. The side will be without International Superstar David Beckham, who will miss the World Cup after tearing his left Achilles’ tendon while playing for AC Milan last month. Expected to replace Beckham on the right side is 21-year old right-winger Theo Walcott.

The Arsenal striker has incredible speed and dribbling ability and should see a lot of playing tome in Beckham’ absence.

The Three Lions was the most dominant team in European qualifying, recording nine wins from ten Group 6 games, scoring a European Zone high of 34 goals in the process, with their only defeat coming in Ukraine with qualification already secured.

With the tournament due to take place in the South African winter, conditions should suit the English players and style well. After an impressive campaign through their UEFA qualifying group, getting past the group stage will not be enough as the Three Lions will be looking to end their title drought. Capello and Co. might just deliver.
