NFL Week 15 Picks with Props – Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets

Sunday, December 20 th – Giants Stadium, East Rutherford – 1:00 PM ET
NFL Point Spread:

The Atlanta Falcons, once a playoff threat, are on a two-game losing streak and are two games back of Dallas for the sixth seed in the NFC. But there are legitimate excuses to the Falcons unfortunate cold streak. Injuries to Matt Ryan and Michael Turner, their two biggest offensive stars, have sucked the life out of what was supposed to be a promising season.

The Atlanta backups haven’t played horribly, however Ryan and Turner sure were missed in last week’s 26-23 loss to the Saints.

The Jets, however, have won three in a row after a 1-6 mid-season stretch. New York is a game behind New England in the AFC East, but they have a much better chance at sneaking into the postseason via the wildcard. It won’t be easy with a remaining schedule that includes the undefeated Colts and AFC North leading Bengals.

What The Falcons Have To Do To Win

The Jets own the NFL’s number one defense, so the Atlanta Falcons would be hard pressed to score even if Matt Ryan and Michael Turner were available. Atlanta is going to have to win on defense; most specifically, the pass rush. With Mark Sanchez expected to start for New York, the Atlanta defense needs to have their best game of the season. Sanchez can play, but only when there is little to no pressure. He’s thrown for 17 interceptions while starting just 11 games, proving he can be forced into making bad decisions as long as the pressure is there.

What The Jets Have To Do To Win

The Jets own the league’s number one rushing attack. The Falcons owns a rush defense that allows, on average, 117.8 rushing yards per game. It doesn’t take a genius to see how New York is going to play this game, especially since they’ll try and take pressure off of the returning Sanchez. Thomas Jones every week continues to make his case for most underrated player in football. He quietly ranks among the league leaders with 1,167 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. He will be the key to the Jets success for the rest of the season.

Outlook & Pick

The Falcons just don’t look like a playoff team without Ryan and Turner. Sure, there were flashes of brilliance last week against a very good Saints team, but you don’t get into the playoffs with moral victories. And without Ryan and Turner that’s what the Falcons are looking at. The New York Jets however, are on a roll and are getting their franchise QB back from injury. They own an incredibly strong running game and believe that they have a shot at the postseason, albeit an outside one. Some will say the Jets are only winning against bad teams, considering their three game win streak has been against teams with below-.500 records. The Falcons record? 6-7.

Pick: New York Jets

A Jets team with a strong running game against a Falcons team with a poor run defense. At worst, the Jets will eat up clock on their first drive and the settle for a field goal.
