It’s only a few weeks until the U.S. Open at Congressional and plenty of questions weigh on bettors’ minds. Will Tiger or Phil ever win another major? Will Stricker or Westwood finally get one? Will Donald, Watney or Johnson finally break through? Here’s an early look at the top 10 favorites.

1. Rory McIlroy (+1200)

The brash Brit has flirted with glory in three straight majors. He finished third at the British Open and PGA Championship and led by four shots heading into Sunday of the 2011 Masters before exploding for an 80. Is he a choker or was the flop just a necessary bump on his road to superstardom?

2. Phil Mickelson (+1200)

The people’s champ has three Green Jackets to his name but still hasn’t won that elusive U.S. Open. He’s a five-time runner up. But is his aggressive play suited to a tight track like Congressional?

3. Tiger Woods (+1200)

Forgetting his major championship prowess, Tiger would warrant consideration even just because he won at Congressional in 2009 and set a record for aggregate score at 13-under. However, given his recent injury woes, he can hardly be trusted right now.

4. Luke Donald (+1500)

After missing the cut at the Northern Trust Open to start 2011, Donald has rattled off seven straight top-10 finishes this season. Arguably, no golfer on Earth is playing better right now. If he had better major-championship success to his credit, he’d be the odds-on favorite.

5. Lee Westwood (+1500)

The “best golfer without a major” has cracked the top three at every major championship at least once in his career but still hasn’t put it all together to win the big one. While he has 21 European Tour victories, he has just two on the PGA – and they were 12 years apart. What if he’s this generation’s Colin Montgomerie?

6. Martin Kaymer (+2000)

Kaymer seems to be the anti-Montgomerie, an unflappable European who doesn’t seem to feel threatened on U.S. soil. The 2010 PGA Champion hasn’t played many PGA events this season but he popped up with a top-20 at THE PLAYERS Championship to remind us about him.

7. Nick Watney (+2500)

Nick Watney may be the only golfer playing at Luke Donald’s level this season. He has six top-10s in 10 tries this season and leads the Tour in the all-around peripheral stat ranking. He hasn’t sniffed success at the U.S. Open, however; his best finish is 60th.

8. Dustin Johnson (+3000)

Dustin Johnson has been through the ringer; he collapsed on Sunday of the U.S. Open last year and infamously missed out on the playoff at the PGA championship after grounding his club in a divot, er, “bunker.” But I see Johnson as the “what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” type. His days of contending in majors are far from over.

9. Hunter Mahan (+3000)

Mahan may be a poor scrambler – but maybe that’s because he doesn’t have to do it very often. He’s usually on the green in regulation, as he ranks 10th on Tour in that stat. His ball striking could suit Congressional nicely.

10. Steve Stricker (+4000)

Stricker is another guy whose ball striking (and putting, of course) could put him in contention at Congressional. But can he get over the hump? He seems to be in hunt at most majors but may lack the steely nerves to ever win the big one.
