PGA Golf – Buick Invitational Preview

For the last four years the only real golf betting option at the Buick Invitational has been Tiger Woods. With Woods sidelined heading into this week’s Buick at Torrey Pines his reign at the top will finally come to an end.

It’s not a stretch to say Woods has completely dominated this tournament the last four years. Woods has won the tournament every year and also captured the Buick in 2003 and in 1999. Woods actually triumphed at Torrey Pines twice last season. At the Buick Woods shot 19-under par to destroy the rest of the field. Ryuji Imada, who finished second, was eight strokes back. A few months later Woods captured the U.S. Open title at Torrey Pines after his epic playoff battle with Rocco Mediate. The win became more impressive after the tournament when it was announced Woods played the entire event on a bum leg.

That same bum leg will keep Woods out of this year’s Buick and the golf odds should look much different than they did last year. The last person to win the Buick not named Tiger Woods was John Daly in 2004. Daly is currently suspended for his off-the-course antics and won’t be among the field this week. The last winner before Daly that wasn’t Tiger will also be skipping the Buick. Jose Maria Olazabal was on top of the leaderboard in 2002, but he won’t be at Torrey Pines this week.

That means the last winner of the Buick returning to Torrey Pines this week is Phil Mickelson. Lefty won back-to-back Buick titles in 2000 and 2001, and he also won in 1993. Mickelson will likely be among the favorites this week, despite his awful performance last week at the FBR Open. Mickelson made his season debut last week, but failed to make the cut after shooting seven-over par in his first two rounds.

While Mickelson struggled to find his game last week Kenny Perry picked up where he left off last season with a victory in the FBR Open. Perry shot 14-under-par over 72 holes and went into a playoff with co-leader Charley Hoffman. Perry won on the third playoff hole, but won’t be a contender at Torrey Pines this week because he’s skipping the Buick.
