This Week’s PGA Tour Predictions!

The 2015 PGA Championship comes our way this week from Whistling Straights – sight of Dustin Johnson’s famous 2010 club grounding and subsequent penalty in what was deemed to be a bunker.

It cost him that tournament. Whistling Straights is a par-72 layout of 7,501 yards with four par 5s, four par 3s and 10 par 4s – four of the par 4s stretch out to over 500 yards.

So who should we keep an eye on this week? Let’s take a peek.

Obviously length off the tee will be a huge advantage this week – bombers will likely be all over the leaderboard, although Zach Johnson is a shorter player that has had some success here. I will be looking at current form, a player’s ability to manage a course and set up their approach. GIR stats are also on my radar.

2015 PGA Championship Favorites:

Jordan Spieth 6/1

No argument with Spieth being the favorite! He has four wins on TOUR this year, two majors and a shot out of a playoff in the other. He is in the mix every time he tees it up – even when he struggles Spieth finishes inside the top 10 like he did at Firestone last week. He leads TOUR in par-4 scoring, par breakers, fewest putts and adjusted scoring – absolutely perfect stats for Whistling Straights. Spieth will contend this week – guaranteed.

Rory McIlroy 10/1

Off an ankle injury on a notoriously tough course to walk, Rory is a bit of a risk this week. He hasn’t seen tournament action since a T9 at Chambers Bay but is still widely regarded as the best golfer on the planet and he is the defending champ. He’s a tad tough to recommend mostly because while he was recovering for a month the other top dogs were preparing for this event. He finished T3 the last time this event was held here in 2010.

Jason Day 12/1

With his health under control Day has been a threat every week he steps onto the tee. He has a win and three top tens in his last five starts with a T12 last week. Day ranks second in the all-around, first in birdies or better, fifth in scrambling and is in the top 5 in almost every driving category on TOUR.

Day is deserving of a Major – he may get it this week.

2015 PGA Championship Contenders:

Dustin Johnson 15/1

No player will be more motivated this week! He got screwed in 2010 and he has been so close in all of the Majors this season. The problem is that DJ just can’t seem to put together four solid rounds in the same tournament lately – he seems to blow up in either the third or fourth round of every tournament he plays the last two months. I do love Justin – I just have a hard time trusting his game right now.

Bubba Watson 15/1

Bubba the bomber should eat this course up – especially with the current form he possesses. Strangely he hasn’t recorded a top ten at the PGA Championship since 2010 – the last time it was held here. He’s been runner-up in his last two starts overall and leads the TOUR in strokes gained: tee-to-green and par-5 scoring. Bubbas seems to be good value this week at 15/1.

Justin Rose 20/1

Has finished inside the top six in his last three starts overall and in four of his last five – as hot as any player on TOUR right now. He is T13 in GIR on TOUR, eighth in proximity and 10th in birdies or better. We just wish his putter would do its part!

[dfads params=’groups=526&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Rickie Fowler 20/1

Is another guy that enters on an upswing. He was second in the Quicken Loans and finished T10 last week at Firestone – top tens in his last four worldwide starts including his Scottish Open win. He has six top-10 finishes in majors – his aggressiveness may give him his first Major win this week.

Hideki Matsuyama 40/1

There are few weaknesses in Matsuyama’s game. He has missed just one cut all season long but does enter off an uncharacteristic T37 at Firestone. He ranks T2 on TOUR in par-4 scoring and fourth in the all-around – just wish his putter was a little more reliable!

2015 PGA Championship Sleepers (50/1 or higher):

Zach Johnson 50/1

He may not be a bomber but The British Open was supposed to be beyond his range and he won there. He finished T3 the last time this tournament was held here in 2010 and currently has top six in four of his last six PGA TOUR starts. Johnson looks like the best value on the board and could provide a nice payday based on current form.

Danny Lee 100/1

Hasn’t slowed down one bit lately. He has been no worse that T6 (which came last week) in his last four starts overall. He is strong in every aspect of the game and looks due for a Major breakthrough.

2015 PGA Championship Picks:

The pick this week is Jason Day at 12/1.He’s been knocking on the door of a Major championship and this is his big chance. Everything lines up here – his current form, his recent play in the Majors and his stats on this very track all point to a Day win.

The Sleeper is Zach Johnson at 50/1. Seriously – 50/1? On a track that he finished third on the last time he played it and after already winning a Major on a course that didn’t suit his game, I can’t resist.
