Defending Champion: Phil Mickelson ($1,116,000)

Awaiting the pros the easiest Par 71 course they saw all year in 2013 – Phil shot a 59 here last year. The fairways are reasonably easy to hit but TPC Scottsdale had a greens-in-regulation clip of 71.23 percent last year – ridiculously easy and scrambling stats were off the charts.

The winner here will have to go low. So who should we keep our eyes on? Let’s break it down.

The Favorites:

Phil Mickelson 12/1

The defending champ and course record holder loves this track – three win and 10 top 10s but his back flared up last week making him a sketchy bet this week. Unless he’s received some quality treatment, I’m staying away from Lefty this week.

Webb Simpson 16/1

Simpson has looked good of late – a T23 at the Humana a couple of weeks ago followed four straight top 10s. He has played well here too – consecutive T8s – in 2011 and 2012. This is a course that rewards experience – Simpson has that in spades.

Keegan Bradley 22/1

Has finished inside the top 20 seven straight times after his T16 at Torrey Pines but has had issues getting to the top of the ladder. He has played here twice and has finished inside the top 25 in both appearances. Bradley has the all around game to contend and he may just be due for a good performance this week.

The Contenders:

Harris English 25/1

English has been arguably the most impressive guy on TOUR this year – three top 10s already. His history here isn’t great however – a T15 in ’12 and a T57 last year. I like guys who have had some success on this track – English isn’t that guy.

Bill Haas 28/1

Haas has been decent the last couple of weeks – a T6 at the Humana and a good week at the Farmers. He has a couple of top 10s here including a T6 last year making him an intriguing 28/1 this week.

Gary Woodland 28/1

Fell off last week after leading after 54 holes and eventually finishing T10. He has a good history here – he’s 4/4 here with a T5 in 2011 and should be able to score on the par 5s.

Graham Delaet 28/1

Has been consistent as they come as of late – T7 or better in his last three starts including a runner-up finish last week. He has finished top 10 in seven of his last 14 starts and could break through with his first win this week.

Ryan Palmer 28/1

Finished eighth at the Sony and second at the Humana and apparently loves this track – he’s five for seven at the WMPO including a pair of top-five finishes – one coming last year. Palmer is Hot and looks due for a win soon.

Billy Horschel 33/1

Has four straight top 25s and he did finish T11 here last year. Horschel did have some issues last week at the Farmers but still finished T23. That result has many people scared off but TPC Scottsdale is much more to his liking.

Chris Kirk 33/1

Finished T2 at the Sony and has made two of three cuts at this tournament. He is a master of the Par 5s and should make some noise on those holes this week. Kirk hasn’t played since Waialea but enters in good form overall.

Ryan Moore 33/1

Moore is another guy playing very well right now – a solo 10th at Kapalua being his best result of late. He finished 4th here last year and has finished top 25 in five of his last six starts.

Charley Hoffman 40/1

Was runner-up here in 2009 – his only top 25 on this track in his career. Hoffman has three top 10s already this year including the last two weeks and should thrive at TPC Scottsdale.

Marc Leishman 40/1

Has finished top 11 in his last four starts and is coming off a T2 at Torrey Pines. Leishman is a streaky guy who could certainly make some noise this week.

Matt Every 40/1

Yet another guy entering in good form. He’s finished top 15 in three of his last four starts and he has finished top 10 in both of his appearances at the Waste Management. Every is under the radar but comes in as one of the hotter players on TOUR.

The Sleepers (50/1 or higher):

Kevin Na 66/1

Na hasn’t been great this year but his history on this track is worthy of mention. He has finished inside the top 10 four times on this track and he already has a T8 this year – at the Sony Open.

Scott Stallings 75/1

Stallings has the ability to go low and is maybe the best value on the board after a win at the Farmers. His form can’t be questioned and the course layout here seems well suited to Stallings all around game.

The Pick:

My pick this week is Graham DeLaet at 28/1. He has to win some time and after last week’s tune-up I think this is the week.

My sleeper is Kevin Na at 66/1. He loves this course and he has already shown good form this year.
