LAST WEEK: Once again, the Capperspicks.com choice to win wasn’t a horrible one. Brian Gay finished 14th at the Bryon Nelson, five shots off the pace. Is it time to take a risk this week? We’ll see if any sleeper stands out.

But it can’t be a total unknown sleeper at the Memorial this week. No rookie has ever won Jack Nicklaus’ tournament, hosted at Muirfield Village. Stellar putting and some decent distance off the tee are criteria that work well at this event.

THE ELITE

Luke Donald
Memorial odds: +715

The world’s new No. 1 has really earned the honor thanks to 15 top-10 finishes in his last 17 starts worldwide. He leads the Tour in scoring average and he’s a top-10 putter but his lack of driving distance might hold him back just a bit this week.

Phil Mickelson
Memorial odds: +1215

Lefty was fifth at the Memorial last year and has cracked the top 10 three times overall. His peripherals have improved of late. He’s quietly 16th on Tour in driving, third in birdie average, 48th in sand saves and, at 62nd, his putting isn’t disastrous. If he can get it going on the greens, he can contend.

THE CONTENDERS

Matt Kuchar
Memorial odds: +1850

Statistically, Kuchar, a.k.a. Mr. Consistency, looks as strong as anyone this week. He’s above average in every skill needed to succeed this week, including driving, greens in regulation and putting. He also has three straight top-10 finishes at the Memorial. Kuchar is a rock-solid play. What else is new?

Nick Watney
Memorial odds: +1850

I can’t fault anyone for picking Donald, Kuchar or Nick Watney every week. These guys have great all-around games and seem to post top-10s in their sleep. Is Watney due to break through this week? I would say not until he fixes his weekend woes. His last nine Saturday/Sunday rounds are in the 70s.

SOLID PICKS

Hunter Mahan
Memorial odds: +2050

Mahan is heating up, with five top-10 finishes in his last eight starts. He’s 11th on Tour in total driving and seventh in greens, so he should set himself up well for birdies. Like Mickelson, he’ll contend if he gets his putter going.

Steve Stricker
Memorial odds: +2550

I have a bit of a hunch on Stricker. His putter and accuracy set him up well for Muirfield Village. The key for him will be overcoming his lack of length off the tee. Stranger things have happened.

Bubba Watson
Memorial odds: +3050

Bubba is the anti-Stricker. He’ll bomb it all day long but his putting ranks among the very worst on Tour. I think it will hold him back this week.

THE SLEEPER

J.B. Holmes
Memorial odds: +3550

If you want to pick the bomber, J.B. Holmes is a more educated choice than Watson this week. Holmes actually leads the Tour in driving distance, he’s a respectable 39th in greens hit and 50th in scrambling, and his putting isn’t a total liability. He’s an interesting sleeper.

THE PICK

I’ve made many “studied” choices in recent weeks and the results have been good but not great. For the Memorial, I think Matt Kuchar is the “studied” pick. This week, I feel like playing a hunch. I have a bit of a hunch for Phil Mickelson but my very first hunch of the day said “Stricker!” I’ll play that hunch.

The Memorial pick: Steve Stricker +2550
