LAST WEEK: Bombed out on John Senden and watched Bill Haas pull off a miracle to win the Tour Championship FedEx Cup. If the top 30 make the final tourney and the 25th-ranked guy can win it all, I suppose it makes the final event exciting, but it sure feels like the last tourney of four is weighted too heavily.
When a tournament with Justin Timberlake’s name in the title arrives, you know it’s time for the PGA’s Silly Season. With that, we’ll continue our betting picks – but we’ll keep them abbreviated. Look for guys to go uber-low this week, as the host course, TPC Summerlin, has a two-year streak going as the Tour’s easiest Par-71.
THE FAVORITE
Nick Watney
Timberlake Shriners odds: +1000
He’s coming home. The Vegas native should be hungry after finishing sixth at The Timberlake (haha, the Timberlake) last season. Watney had three bogeys on his card the entire tourney, so he knows how to go low.
THREE CONTENDERS
Ryan Moore
Timberlake Shriners odds: +1200
Moore has never missed a cut in five tries at this tournament and finished seventh his last time out in 2009. He also has the home comfort factor going as he went to UNLV. At 32nd on Tour in adjusted scoring, Moore also has the all-important ability to dip into the mid and low 60s.
Martin Laird
Timberlake Shriners odds: +1500
History suggests Laird is the safest bet at TPC Summerlin year in, year out. He won the tournament here two years ago and followed up the win with a playoff runner-up finish. His average round over the last two years: 66.
Kyle Stanley
Timberlake Shriners odds: +2500
Not a household name but Kyle Stanley quietly cracked the top 25 in three playoff events before bowing out since he wasn’t a top-30 guy in the standings. He’s 14th in the all-around ranking and 27th in greens hit, so he can throw darts.
ONE SLEEPER
Spencer Levin
Timberlake Shriners odds: +3000
I’m surprised Levin’s odds aren’t higher. He was fourth at this tournament last year and has seven top-25s this season. Levin also sizzled down the stretch at The Timberlake last year, playing the final 55 holes without a bogey.
THE PICK
I love what Stanley brings to the table. His peripherals are strong and we also know he’s striking the ball beautifully right now. The 23-year-old doesn’t have a PGA Tour win but an unintimidating, Silly-Season event is the perfect place to get his first one.
2011 Timberlake Shriners pick: Kyle Stanley +2500
