LAST WEEK: At the Pebble Beach Pro-Am we continued to at least show that we know what we’re talking about, with a handful of guys from our watch list once again littering the leaderboard. Tom Gillis: third. Nick Watney: sixth. Phil Mickelson: ninth. Our pick to win, J.B. Holmes: 13th. Close but we were once again snaked by an obscure name: D.A. Points.

THIS WEEK’S PGA BETTING
Date: Feb. 17 – 20
Event: Northern Trust Open
Course: Riviera CC, Pacific Palisades, California
Purse: Purse: $6,500,000
Defending Champ: Steve Stricker
Winning Share: $1,152,000
FedEX Cup Points Up For Grabs: 500

Perhaps we’ll finally get rewarded this week at the Northern Trust Open. It’s one of the least likely tournaments to have a no-name champ, as just two of its last 22 winners were first-timers. The field is a bit of a shark tank this week, with 31 of the world’s top 50 golfers competing, so we should seek out birdie makers and guys who can attack the pin this week.

THE ELITE

Phil Mickelson
Northern Trust Open odds: +750

This is one week in which Mickelson’s field-leading odds are justified. Lefty’s game is in a good place right now after a ninth-place finish at Pebble Beach in which he led the field in greens in regulation. He also leads the Tour in scoring average. Did I mention that he’s a two-time champ at the Northern Trust Open and the tournament’s all-time money leader? Yeah, there are many reasons to pick Mickelson this week.

Steve Stricker
Northern Trust Open odds: +1215

Stricker also makes a very strong case this week. He won the Northern Trust last year and finished second the year before. He’s a top-six guy in both GIR and birdies or better on par-4s this season. It’s usually easy to predict where Stricker will and won’t struggle and the Northern Trust Open always treats him right.

THE CONTENDERS

Matt Kuchar
Northern Trust Open odds: +2050

Sheesh. There’s a trend forming here. Everyone looks good this week. Kuchar hasn’t really cooled off since his sizzling end to 2010, finishing seventh or better in all three of his starts. He’s second on Tour in birdie average so we know he can make the big shots and putts needed to win at this tourney.

Dustin Johnson
Northern Trust Open odds: +2050

Johnson isn’t exactly hot entering the Northern Trust after a 55th-place finish at Pebble Beach, where he’d won the previous two times. But He’s a boomer who finished third last year. He isn’t a terrible pick but wouldn’t you rather take Kuchar at the same value?

Luke Donald
Northern Trust Open odds: +2050

On the plus side, Donald has a sparkling track record at the Northern Trust Open, with three straight top-six finishes there. On the down side, he hasn’t played since December. Don’t trust the rust.

SOLID PICK

Bubba Watson
Northern Trust Open odds:+3050

Bubba warrants serious consideration as a guy who seems to have as good a shot to win as the names above him but offers a better return on your sportsbook investment. He leads the Tour in driving distance and ball striking. He’s third in greens. His history at the host course, Riviera, isn’t anything special, but his general makeup fits the profile of what it takes to win the Northern Trust Open.

THE SLEEPER

Bill Haas
Northern Trust Open odds:+4550

Haas has the right game, as he’s good at hitting greens (seventh on Tour) and making birdies (ninth in birdies or better on Par 4s). But he finished with an ugly 76 in his last tournament, suggesting he’s not quite as hot as some people think.

THE PICK

Steve Stricker was the first name to pop into my mind. If you like following a gut reaction, pick him and stop reading. After thinking on it more, however, I have to pick Bubba Watson. I just love his combination of power and accuracy – plus the fact that he offers almost triple the return that Stricker does with +3050 odds.

Northern Trust Open pick: Bubba Watson +3050
