PGA Golf Handicapping – McGladrey Classic Preview & Pick

Cappers Picks Golf handicappers have all your latest golf news and information so be sure to make us your trusted source for up-to-the-minute golf details. PGA Golf betting fans will also have plenty golf action to focus on as this year’s PGA Fall Silly season is here.

LAST WEEK: Victory!  Hopefully you took my advice and hit on the Bryce Molder pick.

It may be the Silly Season but a bet is a bet and Molder gave you 33 times your investment.

Let’s see if we can start a streak now with the Tour shifting to Georgia for the McGladrey Classic.

Date: Oct. 13 – 16
Event: The McGladrey Classic
Course: Seaside Course, Sea Island, Georgia
Purse: $4,000,000
Defending Champ: Heath Slocum
Winning Share: $720,000

THE FAVORITE

Webb Simpson
McGladrey Classic odds: +1200

Simpson, the season’s breakout star, has motivation to win this week, as doing so would vault him over Luke Donald to the top of the money list and put him in position for a five-year Tour exemption. Simpson has 10 top-10s on the year, so he’s earned consistent-threat-to-contend status.

THREE CONTENDERS

Matt Kuchar
McGladrey Classic odds: +1500

Accuracy from tee to green at the Seaside Course is paramount this week and Kuchar has it in spades. He’s won the most money of any golfer without a tournament victory this season. Isn’t he due to finally win one? He doesn’t enter the McGladrey hot, however, as he hasn’t finished better than 20th in his last three starts.

David Toms
McGladrey Classic odds: +2500

The always-accurate Toms is fifth on Tour in fairways hit and sixth in greens in regulation. He also tied for third at the McGladrey Classic last year and has been solid lately, finishing 10th and 16th in his last two outings. Rock-solid choice.

Charles Howell III
McGladrey Classic odds: +2500

Howell is a top-25 guy in driving accuracy and greens; he also set the course record last season with a 62 en route to a sixth-place finish. Like Kuchar, Howell feels due.

ONE SLEEPER

Bo Van Pelt
McGladrey Classic odds: +3000

Van Pelt tied for sixth place with Howell last season and sizzled all week, posting only five holes over par. He clearly likes this course. Van Pelt also has two recent top-10 finishes and ranks eighth on Tour in total driving. He’s a similar pick to Howell but at better sportsbook value.

THE PICK

I love the weeks when one guy screams at you to pick him. For me, it’s Toms. His game is beautifully suited to the course; all the things he does consistently well are the things one needs to do to win this tournament. And it helps that Toms has played pretty well of late.

Van Pelt and Howell make for interesting choices – but not when Tom offers more or less the same return on your investment. He’s the safer choice to me.

2011 McGladrey Classic pick: David Toms +2500
