They take a golfer no longer ranked in the World Top 50 (for the first time in 15 years), a golfer who hasn’t won this season, a golfer who hasn’t played in two months, and make him the heavy favorite? They are ROBBING you. The host course, Cordevalle, is close to Stanford, his amateur stomping grounds, and he has a new caddie. But, for heaven’s sake, make Tiger accomplish something before you bet on him again.
THREE CONTENDERS
Spencer Levin
Frys.com Open odds: +2200
Levin quietly has five top-10s on the season and looked good at the Shriners last week, finishing fifth. He’s a respectable 34th in Tour in greens hit, which is a useful stat at Cordevalle, where accurate approaches are key.
Bryce Molder
Frys.com Open odds: +3300
Molder’s putter intrigues me; he’s sixth on Tour in strokes gained putting. He has four top-10s in his last seven tries and was impressive last week, bogeying just two holes. Other than Na, Molder arguably enters this week as the field’s hottest player.
Brandt Jobe
Frys.com Open odds: +3300
His ball striking could put him in contention this week. Jobe is second on Tour in total driving and 17th in GIR. However, his ninth-place at the BMW Championship, his last outing, was only his fourth top-10 of the season. So Jobe hasn’t exactly set the world on fire.
ONE SLEEPER
Chad Campbell
Frys.com Open odds: +3300
Campbell impressed at Cordevalle last season, finishing 13th overall and ranking no worse than 11th in the field in birdies, putting, greens and fairways. He clearly knows how to succeed at this course. He’s also third on Tour in GIR this season.
The pick:
With such an obscure field, it’s hard to fault any pick for the Frys.com Open. I lean toward Molder. He’s playing well at the moment, making plenty of birdies, and his putter could help him post some really low numbers. Give Molder a whirl – not Tiger!
