PGA Betting – FedEx Cup Standings Update

Shea weighs in with his 2011 Fed EX Cup PGA standings and golf power rankings, and a look at the current leaders. Who is sitting pretty and who is on the bubble?

PGA Betting Power Rankings – June 13th Edition

Sure, the majors are still what really counts in PGA golf, but the “playoffs” – a.k.a. the FedEx Cup standings – give us something else to cheer for and bet on during the dull summer sports months.

Let’s have a look at the current leaders.

Who is sitting pretty and who is on the bubble?

THE TOP 10

1. Luke Donald (1,432 points)

How great has Donald been this season? He leads the standings despite playing fewer events than the other top 16 guys. His eight top-10s in nine starts suggest he’ll stay consistent all year.

2. Bubba Watson (1,411 points)

Watson lacks Donald’s consistency but his amazing pure talent and massive drives have helped him win two tournaments this season.

3. Mark Wilson (1,321 points)

Again, the value of victories is apparent with Wilson. He hasn’t done much of late but he won two of his first three tournaments and will ride those points into the playoffs.

4. Matt Kuchar (1,247 points)

Kuchar shows that there’s more than one way to climb the FedEx Cup standings. He hasn’t won a tourney but he’s consistently earned clusters of points by posting eight top-10 finishes.

5. Phil Mickelson (1,247 points)

Lefty has been all over the map this season but he has a win and a runner-up finish to prop himself up in the standings.

6. Nick Watney (1,241 points)

If Luke Donald isn’t the best player in the world right now, Watney deserves consideration. He has a victory plus seven top-10 finishes in his breakout season.

7. K.J. Choi (1,236 points)

Choi is a seasoned vet who nearly tops the list of best players without a major championship. I wouldn’t put it past him to get the monkey off his back this season.

8. David Toms (1,229 points)

Quite the comeback season for David Toms, who has a victory and a playoff loss to his name. Will 2011 go down as his return to prominence or a simple flash in the pan of a dwindling career?

9. Gary Woodland (1,170 points)

Gary who? The relatively young Woodland is making a name for himself this season. He has a victory and a second-place finish and could be a household name before long.

10. Jonathan Byrd (1,154 points)

Byrd is one of those guys who always seem to be “there” on a leaderboard. After going a few years without a victory, he won a tourney in October and another three months later to start the 2011 season.

ON THE BUBBLE NOTABLES

The top 125 golfers qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Which noteworthy golfers are currently in danger of missing the big dance?

105. Tiger Woods (287 points)

Given his injury woes, we have to wonder if Tiger will play enough events to amass the point total needed for the playoffs.

111. Padraig Harrington (271 points)

Paddy has enjoyed a brilliant career but he’s quietly coming up on three years without a victory in Europe or the U.S. Could he be past his prime at age 39?

122. Ernie Els (238 points)

Wow. 122nd? Ernie won the FedEx Cup along with $4.55 million in a banner 2010 season. The bottom has fallen out this season for the Big Easy.

ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN NOTABLES

132. Paul Casey (216 points)

Is the 10th-ranked golfer in the world drifting toward overrated territory? Casey doesn’t play too many PGA events but seven tourneys are just two fewer than the leader Donald.

138. Sean O’Hair (202 points)

For a guy who finished 16th, 10th and 36th in the standings the last three seasons, 138th is very disappointing. O’Hair fired his swing coach this season, not surprisingly.

194. Kenny Perry (64 points)

Perry finished second and fourth in 2008 and 2009 but his prime is over and the 50-year-old is transitioning to the Champions Tour, where his future looks bright.
