LAST WEEK: Luke Donald had all the stats in his favor on paper. But I suppose I ignored the key intangible: that he was a Brit playing at the British Open. Darren Clarke got the job done as an Irishman – but it only took him 20 tries to get that steely resolve needed to win. Onto the Canadian Open, where only the Canadian golfers will feel immense pressure to win.

Date: Monday July 18 – Sunday July 24, 2011
Event: Canadian Open Championship
Course: Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club · Vancouver, B.C., Canada
Purse: $5,200,000
Defending Champ: Carl Pettersson
Winning Share: $918,000
FedEX Cup Points Up For Grabs: 500

Watch for seasoned ball strikers who avoid bogeys this week. Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver doesn’t play long but it has traditionally played among the toughest non-major courses on Tour. Its greens are tiny, though rain last weekend may mercifully soften them up a bit.

THE ELITE

Luke Donald
Canadian Open odds: +800

I wonder if a rather obscure tourney like the Canadian Open, buried out in Western Canada, is just what the doctored ordered for the world’s top-ranked player. Donald is still just two weeks removed from a win in Scotland. He’s also a competitive guy who could be very determined to bounce back and dominate after last week’s flop on his home soil.

RBC Canadian Open Predictions

THE CONTENDERS

Matt Kuchar
Canadian Open odds: +1200

Kuchar’s game matches up well with Shaughnessy. He’s 26th on Tour in ball-striking and third in bogey avoidance. While he’s far from hot, having missed the cut at the British, he was pretty consistent before then, making 29 straight cuts dating back to 2010 and posting top-10s in half his starts this season.

Rickie Fowler
Canadian Open odds: +1500

Are you willing to play a hunch that it may be the youngster’s time? Fowler, 22, hasn’t won on the PGA Tour yet. But his fifth-place finish at the Open last week turned plenty of heads. While his future looks bright, I don’t personally like him for this week’s course setup. He doesn’t rate well in ball-striking, driving accuracy, bogey avoidance or greens in regulation.

Charl Schwartzel
Canadian Open odds: +1500

The +1500 odds are justified for the reigning Masters champ. Schwartzel hasn’t missed a cut all year and has seven top-25s in 10 tries. He has the right game for this event, ranking 28th in ball-striking. I like him.

SOLID PICKS

Ryan Moore
Canadian Open odds: +2500

As a Seattle native, Moore is more of a hometown hero than many of the Canadians at this event. The pressure didn’t get to him the last time Vancouver hosted the Canadian Open in 2005; he finished second. Moore isn’t a total stab in the dark.

Spencer Levin
Canadian Open odds: +4000

Levin is solid ball-striker and he warrants special attention after he performed well at Pebble Beach earlier this season, as it has the same small greens and Poa grass as Shaughnessy. He’s an interesting combination of solid peripheral stats and proven ability under the course conditions we’ll see this week.

THE SLEEPER

Brian Gay
Canadian Open odds: +5000

If you follow history, you won’t like Gay as a pick this week, as he’s missed the cut eight times in 10 tries in Canada. However, he’s second on Tour in fairways and seventh in bogey avoidance. There’s no denying that, in theory, Gay’s game at least suits the course.

THE SUPER-SLEEPER

Stephen Ames
Canadian Open odds: +6000

We can’t cover the Canadian Open without referencing a single Canadian, right? Ames has the best odds of any hometown player this week. Other than driving accuracy, his peripheral stats are poor. He has more missed cuts than top-30 finishes this season. So he looks like a pretty bad pick. However, he did finish seventh the last time the tournament was played in Vancouver. And I can’t blame you if you feel like making a sentimental pick.

THE PICK

While there’s no one I absolutely love this week, a few guys stand out. Donald makes sense based on his emotional motivation. Levin’s peripherals and sportsbook value are nice.

But I like Schwartzel the best. His consistency this season reminds me of Kuchar’s last year and he shouldn’t feel much pressure at all as a South African playing so far away from home.

Toss in his solid ball-striking skills and you have what I think is a winning pick.
