LAST WEEK: Mark Wilson? Who? So a relative unknown captured the Sony Open last week. He serves as a reminder that longshot picks do work out once in a while. Don’t be afraid to take a risk if it’s a calculated one! Of the names on our radar, only Matt Kuchar made noise last week. You can bet we’ll have a close eye on him again this week.

If you like comically low scores, the Bob Hope Classic is the tournament for you. The cushy setup uses four courses, all of which were among the top seven easiest in relation to par last year.

So we’re looking for guys who hit greens and who make birdies this week.

THIS WEEK’S PGA BETTING
Date: Jan. 19 – 23
Event: Bob Hope Classic
Course: PGA West (Palmer Course), La Quinta, CA
Purse: $5.5 million
Defending Champ: Bill Haas
Winning Share: $990,000
FedEX Cup Points Up For Grabs: 500

THE ELITE

Matt Kuchar
Bob Hope Classic odds: +1015

Now feels like the perfect time to pick Kuchar. His game looks just as sizzling as it did last year; he’s opened 2011 with sixth and fifth-places finishes. But he hasn’t won yet. You get the feeling he’s building toward it – especially since he finished second at the Bob Hope last year.

Tim Clark
Bob Hope Classic odds: +1415

Like Kuchar’s game, Clark’s is in a good place right now; he tied for second at the Sony Open last week. Also like Kuchar, Clark tied for second last year at the Bob Hope. The only problem: Clark is battling blisters on his feet. Since he could still withdraw, he’s a risky proposition.

THE CONTENDERS

Bill Haas
Bob Hope Classic odds: +2050

Good idea to include the defending champ in the discussion. Because of his game, his success at the Bob Hope seems repeatable. Haas has cracked the top 35 in greens in regulation for three straight years.

Bubba Watson
Bob Hope Classic odds: +2550

Here’s yet another guy who tied for second last year. Bubba is an intriguing pick because he can go low – really low – when he gets hot. He was eighth on Tour in birdie average last year. He can post the low-60s rounds needed to win here.

SOLID PICK

Steve Marino
Bob Hope Classic odds: +2250

Tied for second at the Sony last week. The key stat is that he led the field in greens hit. For most of his career, Marino has consistently hit greens. That gives him a good chance to succeed this week.

THE SLEEPERS

John Senden
Bob Hope Classic odds: +4050

If you subscribe to the greens-in-reg theory, how about picking the man who led the Tour in greens hit in 2009 and 2010? Senden has also made every cut in nine tries at the Bob Hope classic, cracking the top 25 five times. He’s perfectly suited for this tournament.

D. J. Trahan
Bob Hope Classic odds: +4550

Last three finishes at the Bob Hope: 26-under (first), 25-under (14th), 24-under (seventh). He was seventh on Tour in GIR last year and the year before. Trahan loves this tournament and it loves him. He offers darned good value at +4550.

The pick:

Very tough choices this week. The totally logical bet says no one is better than Kuchar right now and that he’s due to win one. But you never know when Bubba Watson will get hot. And sleepers like Senden and Trahan give you quadruple the return for your buck that Kuchar does.

Time to take our first risk of the year. Kuchar will probably contend again, but let’s swing for the fences with Trahan. He’s an educated gamble.

Bob Hope Classic pick: D.J. Trahan +4550
