2009 PGA Championship Preview/Picks

Preview and free golf picks for the 2009 PGA Championship, which is hosted by Hazeltine National golf club in Chaska Minnesota. The purse is $7.5 million, and the defending champ is Padraig Harrington…

Golf Betting – PGA Championship – Hazeltine CC Predictions/Pick

Golf Odds – No one will slay this Tiger this week

PGA Championship betting for the year’s final major at Hazeltine is paced by a man going for his fifth Wanamaker Trophy, and while he should win, there are a couple of other golfers who should get a look as well. Still, this is Tiger’s week.

PGA Championship Odds – Thursday, August 13

Sergio Garcia (+3000) – He should have longer odds, seeing as he has only one top-10 in 12 events. But he finished T-10 at Hazeltine in 2002, and is coming off a respectable 22nd-place result in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. If Rich Beem can win here in ’02, Garcia can win in ’09, can’t he? He just needs to sort the putter out.

Hunter Mahan (+3300) – Mahan may be playing as well as anyone on the PGA Tour not named Tiger Woods. He has four top-six finishes in his last five starts, and although he missed the cut at the British Open, he has top-10s at The Masters and the US Open. If I have to choose one other online betting pick this week, this would be the guy.

Steve Stricker (+3300) – Stricker may be hurt by the outlandish length of Hazeltine (at 7,678 yards, it’s the longest major-championship course in history), but he’s accurate with the driver and the irons, and we all know he’s one of the best putters on the Tour. Stricker needs a gameplan like Zach Johnson used to win The Masters in 2007, and he can get around Hazeltine.

Angel Cabrera (+4500) – This year’s Masters champion has a simple formula: if he can keep his ridiculously-long drives in the fairway, his putter usually follows suit, and he ends up in contention. Cabrera was T-48 at Hazeltine in 2002, and he’s coming off a T-4 result at Firestone. When it comes to major-championship sports picks, look for many to side with Cabrera.

The Pick: There’s not much value here at +140, but how can you go against Tiger Woods? He’s won three of his last four starts, including two in a row, and you know he’s still fuming at missing the cut at the British Open.

He finished second to Beem at Hazeltine in 2002, and he had T-6s at the Masters and US Open. He’s long enough off the tee to handle the length of Hazeltine, and his shot-making and course-management skills can save him when his driver gets away from him, as it often has this year.

His irons and putting were spectacular at Firestone last week, and his Sunday duel with defending PGA Championship winner Padraig Harrington was just what he needed to him into a major-championship state of mind.

Tiger Woods is a no-brainer in your sports betting software.

This is definitely a case of Tiger vs the Field. Either you bet him to win or you don’t. Given the fact that this is his last chance to win a major this year, I’m going with Woods all the way
