2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational Preview/Picks

This week’s event is the 2009 PGA Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill GC, and in our preview and picks we note golf betting odds are throwing their weight behind Tiger Woods again this week, what a surprise?…

PGA Betting – Woods Overwhelming Favorite At Bay Hill

Golf betting odds are throwing their weight behind Tiger Woods this weekend in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club and Lodge, and that’s no surprise given that Woods is the defending champion and has won this event five times in the past. But there are still some solid sportsbook options out there besides the world No.1, including a 25-year veteran who has been one of the best on the Tour over the last year.

Woods is favored by Bay Hill odds of +225, and last year’s Sunday putt on the tricky 18th green at Bay Hill was just another chapter in the legend. Woods is playing himself into form just in time for the Masters, and he would have challenged for the lead at the WGC-CA Championship if not for a rusty putter. If the flatstick starts working for Woods, the rest of the typically-strong Bay Hill field could be in trouble.

Kenny Perry has a victory and four top-10s in eight starts this year, and he also won at Bay Hill in 2005. Perry has Bay Hill odds of +2800 this weekend, and he ranks 10th in scoring average so far this year.

David Toms is leading the Tour in scoring average, but he’s been a bit inconsistent this year. His 2008 results look like this: second, 25th, fourth, missed cut, sixth, 33rd, in six events. By this rationale, Toms should be in line for a top-10 this weekend, and he has Bay Hill odds of +4000. Bay Hill rewards players with good irons, and Toms has long been one of the best iron players on the Tour.

A lot of eyes will be on Charles Howell III over the next couple of weeks, and he has Bay Hill odds of +4000 this week. CHIII needs a win to get into the field for the Masters and, as an Augusta native, there is nothing he’d love more than to be there. He finished second in last week’s Transitions Championship, and he finished eighth at Bay Hill back in 2005, but his last trip here in 2007 yielded a disappointing 56th

The smart play here is Kenny Perry, unless you want to go with the chalk pick, Tiger Woods. Woods looked great from tee to green at Doral, but putting usually takes longer to come back. Still, mark Woods down for a top-10 as he prepares for the Masters. As for Perry, he is coming off a 17th-place finish on a tough Copperhead course and his ball-striking ability is perfect for the layout at Bay Hill.

Make Kenny Perry your golf betting pick this weekend.
