Well folks, the matchup you have all been waiting for is upon us. The Gold Medal in Olympic Men’s Hockey will take place on Sunday afternoon between Canada and the United States, the new super-rivalry in International Hockey. Gone are the days of the great Russia-Canada rivalries, the United States is now Canada’s biggest threat to International Hockey supremacy.
In two of the three Olympic tournaments that the Pros have played in the United States and Canada have squared off in the final – the other time being in 2002 when Team Canada upset the Americans on their own soil. This game is full of intrigue – if you don’t watch you’re simply not a hockey fan!
Team USA has been far and away the best, most consistent team in these Olympics. They have ridden their great chemistry and balance and have gotten on quite a roll. They already beat Canada 5-3 in the Round Robin and they have continued their impressive ways to find a spot in the Gold Medal Final.
The Americans are the youngest team in the tournament. With their youthful energy and speed, they have terrorized their opposition. They skate hard, check hard and when they do make a mistake they have All-World Ryan Miller between the pipes. The General Manager of Teams USA really knew what he was doing when he assembled this squad. The Americans are a nightmare to play against.
Team Canada has played 2 2/3 games of superb hockey with the other 1/3 being the third period against Slovakia in their Semi-final game. They have been firing on all cylinders and to everyone’s surprise it isn’t Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby or Rick Nash that are the producers on the team. Instead it is the youngsters – Getzlaf, Perry, Doughty and Seabrook that are getting it done. “The Rock” Martin Brodeur has been replaced by Roberto Luongo. This Team Canada has a totally different feel than the one that entered the tournament two weeks ago.
Canada doesn’t have only themselves to worry about; they have the weight of a whole nation on their shoulders. For many Canadians, they would trade all of the snowboard, speed skating and bobsledding medals for one Men’s Olympic Hockey Gold Medal. It is hard to imagine that the Canadians won’t be tight and nervous in a game that the Americans seem to have no pressure at all.
Team USA relishes the underdog roll, that is for certain but Team Canada simply cannot let the home crowd down. There is no chance that the proud members of Team Canada will let the American National Anthem play at Canada Hockey Place.

Canada is the better team and should win but the US comes into this game with a ton of momentum and a very good chance to pull off the upset.
