Sunday’s Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament concludes with a Pool C showdown between the two teams that played for Gold in the 2006 Torino Olympic final. Team Finland and Team Sweden continue their Scandinavian rivalry in a game that will decide the winner of Pool C and who will gain an automatic berth into the Quarterfinals.

Team Finland (2-0) has been led so far by underappreciated Mikko Koivu and has been bolstered by strong performances by NHL veterans Sakku Koivu and Teemu Selanne. The goaltending tandem of Mikka Kiprusoff and Nicklaus Backstrom has performed well causing a mini-goaltender controversy of who will start in goal for the Fins in their most important game of the Round Robin so far.

The Fins are well experienced with their Forwards and defensive unit that is anchored by Sammy Salo, who will be playing in front of a hometown crowd on Sunday night. Experience is important for sure but there is a fine line between veteran presence and players who might be past their prime. Team Finland will have no trouble getting “up” for this game against their arch rivals, but it will be interesting to see how the element of fatigue will affect the older Finish players.

Team Sweden (2-0) is a Medal favorite but has been playing like anything but. There are four or five teams that have been far more impressive than the sluggish Swedes who will need to raise the level of their game to serve notice that they are indeed a Medal contender. The offensive firepower of Team Sweden is well documented but it has not translated on the ice. The Sedin twins have appeared average and outside of Daniel Alfredsson, the Swedes have not realized their offensive potential yet. Hopes are that Sweden has gotten their bad game out of the way with a narrow 2-0 victory against the pesky Germans and a lackluster effort against Belarus. A game against their arch nemesis will certainly motivate Team Sweden to perform at a level that is expected of them.

Sunday’s Pool C showdown is a difficult one to predict but one thing is certain – both teams will come out flying in order to make a statement to the rest of the tournament teams. Top spot in Pool C is on the line as well as an automatic place in the Quarterfinal. Expect a competitive, low scoring game in this one. Sweden should win but in their typical recently unspectacular style.

Are you high? Let me teach you a little something about hockey. First of all Finland will beat Sweden 4-1 and then go all the way to the gold game and probably win it too.
