Tournament Preview: Group A features Canada, the United States, Switzerland and Norway. Group B features Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Latvia. Group C features Sweden, Finland, Belarus and Germany. After round 1 all teams are ranked. The winners of the four quarter final games will proceed to the medal round. The rest will duke it out for a playoff spot according to seeds.

Team Sweden faces off against Belarus in Olympic Men’s Hockey on Friday as part of their final tune up game before a rematch of the Gold Medal game in Torino versus their arch rivals Finland on Sunday.
Belarus (0-1) is coming off a 5-1 loss to the defending Silver Medal winning Fins – a game in which they were only able to generate 13 shots on goal against Mikka Kiprusoff. They are clearly a second or third rate team who are not in the same class as the elite teams in the tournament. Sergei Kostitsyn and the other two NHL caliber players did not offer much resistance to the seemingly underwhelming Fins. Belarus’s problem is not chemistry (they have 12 players from one team Dynamo Minsk on their roster).
Their problem is talent, and they will have a rough night against a skilled and experienced Swedish team.
Team Sweden (1-0) can breath a sigh of relief after a less that stellar debut against a pesky German team on Wednesday night. Sweden was aided by a little luck (a hit goalpost in the first period when the game was scoreless) and some decent play from their talented Forwards. The Sedin twins were largely ineffective in their first game as was Daniel Alfredsson. With the first game under their belts, expect the Swedes to come out flying in their second game and use this game as a tune up for their important Group C matchup with their arch rivals, Team Finland on Sunday.
A win against Belarus and then against Finland will clinch top spot in Group C and allow the proud Swedish players to forget about their lackluster start to their Gold Medal defense.
Because goal differential is the determining factor in tie breaking situations, Sweden will need to score a lot to make up for lost ground on the other elite teams in the tournament.
Belarus should offer no opposition to the offensive talent of a Sweden team that needs a better effort on Friday for their confidence and their place in the standings going forward.
Team Sweden will be huge in this game, so don’t be scared off by their lackluster effort in the first game of their 2010 Olympic Men’s Hockey campaign.
