Team Russian and the Czech Republic meet on Sunday in one of three “Super Sunday” matchups in the Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament. The Czech are in the driver’s seat in Pool B while the Russians need a win to gain back a little of their confidence and overall swagger.

The Russian Federation (1-1) is a tough team to figure out. Coming into Vancouver, they were odds on favorites to win their Pool and march on to a Gold Medal showdown with Team Canada. Someone forgot to tell Team Slovakia about this script that has been years in the making. Although their loss against Slovakia is not the end of the world for the Russians, it did serve as a wake up call and a bit of an International slap in the face.

Russia’s challenge now is to rebound from humiliation and take the lessons learned from Thursday night’s debacle. The offense has to be better, the defense has to be better, and the goaltending, well, it just has to keep doing what it is doing. The superstars on Team Russia have to step up in this game. They are some of the best players on the planet and should be able to generate enough scoring touch to get the job done on Sunday.

On Sunday, look for the Russians to get back to the basics against an overmatched Czech team. Their game plan will be to dump the puck into the Offensive zone, fore-check and throw a lot of pucks on the Czech goal. There is no reason why this talented bunch of millionaires cannot rise to the occasion. Expect the Russian Federation to come out flying and live up to the pre-tournament hype.

The Czech Republic (2-0) was supposed to be 2-0 at this point, but they certainly were not supposed to be alone in first place in Pool B. They have played OK hockey, but not spectacular. Jaromir Jagr has shown up in this tournament so far and shown the world once again why he is considered one of the most dominant players of the last two decades or so. He has been the Czech spark plug. Goaltender Thomas Vokoun has equaled Jamomir Jagr as the best Czech player. He was the reason why the Czechs were able to beat Slovakia in the Czech Republic’s first game. He will have to be the star on Sunday if they want to claim top spot in Group B.

Sundays’ Group B showdown is full of intrigue. The Russians and the Czech have yet to play their best game but will undoubtedly bring their “A Games” into this match. The lines have yet to be determined but expect a competitive game that will see more than a few goals scored.

Czech Republic vs Russia Free Gambling Pick
A 5-3 Russian win seems to be a good prediction in what should be an up-tempo game in which the Russian Federation will demonstrate to the world why they are considered Gold Medal favorites.
