The Maple Leafs have been doing all they can to play themselves out of a playoff spot with just one win in their last five games and eight in their last 24, while Boston returns home following a tough Western road trip in which they were outscored 9-5.

That Western road swing didn’t go all that well for the Bruins, though goaltender Tuukka Rask did steal a game for the team in the final, shutting out the San Jose Sharks in a 1-0 win. Rask made 26 saves in that game for his fifth shutout of the season, the highest mark in the league, and his third shutout in 10 games. The team’s lone goal in that victory came from Carl Soderberg, who scored a goal that was set up by Loui Eriksson, who returned to the team’s lineup for the first time since suffering a concussion on Dec. 7.

The team now gets a Toronto team that they’ve beaten in nine of the last 10 regular season meetings. To make Toronto’s hopes even dimmer, Boston has also gone 14-1-1 in their last 16 home games.

The Bruins hope to get their power play going again when facing the Maple Leafs as they have failed to score with the man advantage in their last five games, spanning 13 chances.

The Bruins are 10 for 31 on the power play in their last 12 games against the Maple Leafs, and have converted on four of six power play opportunities in the two meetings between the teams this season.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a 3-2 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils which ended a season-worst four-game losing streak, but the team has still won in regulation only twice in their last 26 games. To make matters worse, the Leafs have lost 12 of their last 14 road games.

If the Leafs hope to turn that around they’ll need to contain the Bruins top line, as Milan Lucic and David Krejci have combined for 31 points in the last 12 meetings with Toronto.

As much trouble as the Maple Leafs have had of late, they still know how to find the back of the net, with most of their troubles coming at the other end of the ice, which doesn’t bode well for them against a Bruins club that has scored 13 times in the last four meetings between the teams.

The over is 6-1-4 in the Bruins’ last 11 games overall, and 5-1-2 in the Maple Leafs’ last eight games overall.

The play: Over 5.5
