If young Drew Doughty feels any added pressure after being named to Canada’s Olympic team as a 20 year old, it sure doesn’t show. The defenseman is enjoying a phenomenal year, already with 32 points, and he had four assists in L.A.’s big road win versus the Sharks three nights ago. By opening 2010 with wins over the Sharks and Capitals, the Kings have told you all you need to know; they’re here to stay as contenders in the West.
We keep waiting for the Red Wings to snap out of their funk but it’s a long process. Thankfully for Hockeytown, reinforcements are finally all the way. Detroit already welcomed back Valtteri Filppula and should get Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary back from injury tonight. That would give a major shot in the arm to a team that hasn’t had the offensive horses to hang with the big boys this season.
Still, we can’t expect the Wings to magically transform back into a powerhouse tonight. Zetterberg and Cleary will take a few games to regain their legs. If you want to forecast when Detroit’s “comeback” begins, you should wait for next week, as trips to L.A. and San Jose are tough to overcome.
Look for the Kings to stay hot tonight on the strength of their solid power play and Jon Quick’s steady goaltending. Even if you feel lucky with the Wings, they offer weak value for an underdog because sportsbooks are biased toward their success of last season.
