Razor Ray’s NHL Trend Report: Week 10

Betting On NHL Hockey?

The NHL season is in full swing, and it’s not too early for hockey bettors to begin looking for edges. Many players in the league have established track records and it’s by looking at their history that we can begin to find holes in the oddsmakers’ lines.

Here is a look at some stats and trends worth keeping an eye on when breaking down the board this week, and in the weeks ahead.

The under is 6-1 in the New York Islanders’ last seven home games.

The Islanders aren’t really known for their sound defensive play, with their strong group of forwards up front really grabbing all the headlines, but the team has done a good job of limiting opponents’ scoring chances this season.

The team hosts another squad that can do that well in the New Jersey Devils on Monday night. The under is 8-3 in the Devils’ last 11 road games, and it is 10-4-2 in their last 16 games overall. They’ve also been money on the under when facing divisional opponents, with a 6-0-1 under mark when playing inside the Metropolitan Division.

The Islanders have also been on a good run of unders against divisional opponents, with under tickets cashing in four of their last five divisional games. These two teams also like to play to the under when they face off, as they’ve combined to play below the number in at a 3-1-1 clip in their last five meetings, and 22-8-2 in their last 32 meetings in New York.

Devils goaltender Cory Schneider certainly enjoys facing the Islanders. He’s posted a 1.31 goals-against-average in three starts against the Islanders, each of which has come on Long Island. In his most recent meeting with them, Schneider stopped 25 of 27 shots in a 3-1 loss on Nov. 29.

Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak has fared quite well against the Devils himself. He has posted a 2.28 GAA against New Jersey since the start of the 2010-11 season. Getting this game at home is also a big boost for him, as he’s posted a 1.74 GAA over his last nine home starts. The Devils have also had trouble finding the back of the net on the road, averaging 2.0 goals per game over their last 15 road contests, while the Islanders have surrendered two goals or fewer in eight of their previous nine home games.

The Buffalo Sabres are 5-0 in their last five home games.

Buffalo has been an easy team to fade this season, but they’ve been a very profitable play for alert bettors. Monday they host an Ottawa Senators squad that is 2-6 in its last eight games and 1-4 in its last five road games. The home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings between the Sabres and Senators.
