2014-2015 Winnipeg Jets Betting Preview:

Perennial underachievers, the Jets who finished 11th in the West last year will go largely with the same lineup that saw them a middling team – far from playoff bound and destined to hover in that “C level” of NHL teams.

Winnipeg could get a boost from a few of their young corp. of players – they will absolutely have to in order to realize the dreams of their loyal fans and their dedicated front office.

We know what the Winnipeg Jets are – an OK team all over the ice.

Offense

The big question is – What can they be? Evander Kane is the biggest piece of the pie in Winnipeg – he disappointed last year scoring just 19 goals and 41 points after 30 goals and 74 points the year before.

Controversy follows Kane but thankfully it is not his affinity with social media this year – it is the rumor of a possible trade that will see him answering questions all season long.

The Jets will absolutely need Kane to stay healthy this year – he missed 10 games last season and has been a bit of an injury-waiting-to-happen. Youngster Mark Scheifele is another key cog – he started to heat up last season before going down to injury himself.

Scheifele missed the last quarter of the season with an MCL sprain and also needs to remain healthy for the Jets to have any sort of chance at a playoff spot. Second year defenseman Jacob Trouba is also another nice piece that the Jets have in place.

Defense

The problem for Winnipeg will be the supporting cast. Winnipeg just isn’t that deep a squad. With management’s lack of offseason moves it is difficult to see the Jets competing even within their own division with the likes of the Blackhawks, the Blues, the Wild, the Stars and the Avs.

Mathieu Perrault is about the only notable signing and he should find himself buried on the third or fourth line.

Ondrej Pavelec will once again be Winnipeg’s backstop and following the theme of the rest of the team – he’s OK – not great.

From the goaltender out, the Jets simply look like an average team with no real reason to think that they can take the next step.

The Jets were a .500 team last season – I see more of the same this year. Sure they may go on a good run or two just to tease the fans but without depth up front, depth on the back end and without elite goaltending competing in the Central, let alone the West looks like too much to ask.

Winnipeg is poised to finish out of the playoffs yet again prompting some big changes for the team.

The Jets have some nice pieces – the problem is that there just isn’t enough in place to get them over the hump.
