The defending Stanley Cup champions Los Angeles Kings will be back on the ice this year looking for a rare recent repeat of Hockey’s Holy Grail. The Kings have been a good, not great Regular Season team the last few seasons.

Something about the playoffs brings the absolute best out in this squad allowing them to win two of the last four championships.
The Kings didn’t make a whole lot of offseason moves – they enter the season with largely the same lineup that reigned supreme last year.

Los Angeles went 46-28-8 last year despite an offense that averaged just 2.42 goals per season – good for 26th in the NHL. The reason the Kings got away with it? None other than defense and goaltending which has carried this team the better part of the last half decade.
Drew Doughty, Jake Muzzin, Slava Voynov, Matt Greene, Robyn Regehr and Alec Martinez make up one of the more impressive defensive groups in the NHL – the loss of Willie Mitchell to free agency looms but shouldn`t be a huge factor going forward.

Jonathan Quick has emerged as the best big-game goaltender in the NHL. He has played in his fair share of pressure games the last few years and has come out smelling like a rose. Last year was an uncharacteristically average year for the keeper however – on the heels of an injury that kept him out of the crease the first third of the year.

Quick also showed some cracks in the playoffs but when needed the most, Quick was the typical difference maker we`ve all come to expect. Quick will be better this year which doesn`t bode well for the rest of the NHL.
Offensively the Kings re-signed Marian Gaborik – a move that could pay dividends or one that could blow up right in management’s face. The Kings also opted to keep Mike Richards who produced just 11 goals last year in 82 games.
The best two-way player in the game Anze Kopitar still exists along with Jeff Carter, Dustin Brown, Justin Williams, Trevor Lewis, Dwight King and their two youngsters, Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson.
Simply put the Kings have one of the deepest, most impressive offensive lineups in the NHL heading into the season – the trick is getting all to realize their potential instead of floundering around the bottom quarter of NHL teams in terms of offense.

We all know that repeating as up champs is a monumental task – and this year should be no different.
LA has a knack of making things difficult on themselves and the fact that they play in the toughest division in Hockey and in the uber-tough West makes a repeat that a tad more difficult to imagine.

This team isn’t great in regular season – a Pacific Division championship and a Western Conference crown may be a bit of a stretch.
It`s not that I don`t like the Kings – I just like a team in their division – and a couple of teams in the West a little bit more!
Expect LA to battle hard to make the playoffs again and to peek at the end of the year – only to fall to Chicago in the West final!
