After an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final a year ago, the Flyers found themselves on the brink of first-round elimination this season when the Buffalo Sabres took them to overtime in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-final. But the Flyers responded. After Scott Hartnell tied the game in the third to send it to the extra frame, Ville Leino was the overtime hero.

Heading back home for Game 7, can the Flyers deliver? Winning in their own building hasn’t been easy; they’ve lost two of three at the Wells Fargo Center. But the road OT win puts the momentum on their side – especially since the Philly fans will be raucous.

The tide is also turning in the health department. The Sabres are missing two of their top six forwards: Jason Pominville (lower leg) and Tim Connolly (upper-body). Meanwhile, the Flyers still won’t have Jeff Carter (knee) but had the joy of welcoming back their defensive pillar, Chris Pronger, for Game 6.

On paper, everything about Game 7 seems to point Philadelphia’s way. But we need to look closer. First off – Pronger is “back,” but that’s an overstatement. He played just 4:33 in Game 6 – all on the power play. He hasn’t been brought back to resume his role as the shutdown guy; he’s just a power-play specialist. That clearly suggests that he’s not at full health.

Secondly, though the Sabres are without two key forwards, they’re set to welcome back one of their top offensive players. Derek Roy hasn’t played since he tore his quad in December. He was a point-per-game player at that point. He’s set to return for Game 7. If he can shake off the rust, he could play an important role feeding Sabre snipers Drew Stafford and Thomas Vanek on Tuesday.

The pick:

We still haven’t discussed what I think will be the deciding factor in Game 7: goaltending. The Flyers have used three different netminders in this series. Sergei Bobrovsky got the hook in Game 2. Brian Boucher flopped in Game 5 and gave way to Michael Leighton, who flopped in Game 6 and gave way to Boucher again. Does anybody want this job? The Flyers have no one they can rely on. Meanwhile, even though he hasn’t been a world beater in this series, Ryan Miller is absolutely a guy people want to play in front of for a Game 7.

True to this series, I’d expect a close game, but I like the goaltending edge to lead Buffalo over Philly in what could be another overtime thriller.

Sabres vs Flyers prediction: Sabres 3, Flyers 2

Money Line: Sabres +140
Spread: Sabres +1.5
Over/Under: UNDER 5.5
