It didn’t take long after the series shifted to Tampa Bay for Lightning to strike in terms of one of the most pressing issues that the hockey world has been forced to deal with this season. Hits to the head have left a stain on the NHL in 2011, an issue there is an even bigger spotlight on in the postseason.

While the Pittsburgh Penguins bounced back to clinch a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay and earn at least a split on the road, all of the talk after the game was about a pair of illegal hits that took place.

Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz and the Lightning’s Steve Downie each received one-game suspensions from the NHL for separate hits in Monday’s game three. Kunitz hit Tampa Bay winger Simon Gagne at the side of the head with an elbow and was given a minor penalty, while Downie left his feet to hit defensemen Ben Lovejoy seconds before the Penguins’ Maxime Talbot scored to negate the penalty.

On paper it seems as though Pittsburgh has suffered the greater loss having already lost a couple of key offensive pieces in team captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. With Kunitz joining them on the sidelines, scoring will be at a premium for the Penguins.

Things have been tough enough for Tampa Bay even with their stars in the lineup. Martin St. Louis has been arguably the best player for either team in the series, but he cannot get the job done alone.

St. Louis scored twice in the Lightning’s game three loss, but Vinny Lecavalier and Steven Stamkos were held to just an assist each. Lecavalier and Stamkos will both need to raise their level of intensity on home ice in order to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination before heading back to Pittsburgh, while the door is wide open for the depth players on Tampa Bay to contribute the way that names like Maxime Talbot and Tyler Kennedy have for the Penguins.

Marc-Andre Fleury looked outstanding in game one but lost at times in game two, and the Lightning are hoping that the same thing will happen in game four a solid performance in their first game at Tampa Bay.

Pick: Lightning -150
