The Philadelphia Flyers are officially in deep trouble. Hoping to at least get a split at home after dropping Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinal to the Boston Bruins, they got hearts broken and fell in overtime in Game 2. After David Krejci solved Brian Boucher 14 minutes into the extra frame, the Bruins improved to 4-0 in overtime for the 2010-11 playoffs.

Krejci broke Philadelphia’s heart but it was Tim Thomas that really killed the Flyers. He stopped a career-high 52 shots, including 46 in a row. The Flyers outshot Boston 32-`12 in the third period and overtime but it still wasn’t enough.

Now, the Flyers find themselves heading back to Boston down 2-0 and really struggling to figure out Thomas. Worse yet, Boucher’s performances continue to be all over the map. They just don’t know what they’re going to get from him night-in, night-out. It further complicates things that Boucher left Game 2 with a dislocated finger and will try to play through it.

The Flyers also look like they’ll be without two key contributors again tonight. Chris Pronger still isn’t 100 per cent and the shutdown defender likely won’t play in Game 3. Same goes for top goal scorer Jeff Carter, who is a game-time decision.

Bettors have a tricky decision tonight. You can still make a case for the Flyers. Even without Pronger and Carter, this is still one of the NHL’s deepest teams – and a team that rallied from a 3-0 series deficit to beat Boston last season, James Van Riemsdyk has been dynamite of late; he scored both Philly goals in Game 2. And the Flyers heavily outplayed Boston in Game 2.

However, while you could argue that Flyers are due to win given how much they dominated Game 2, I wonder if it’s the opposite. If they couldn’t beat Boston despite 54 shots, when will they ever beat Boston? Aren’t the Bruins due for an earful from coach Claude Julien and a better performance tonight?

It feels like the Flyers should push back, just as it felt like the Washington Capitals would last night, but it may not be in the cards. It seems like the Bruins are pulling away. I’d expect another tight affair with the clutch Bruins slipping by again.

Flyers vs Bruins prediction: Bruins 2, Flyers 1
