When you have two of the most outspoken coaches in the league rivaling one another in an NHL playoff series, it’s only a matter of time before the war of words begins. In the aftermath of the New York Rangers’ 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals in game three of their best-of-seven Sunday night, things have begun to heat up. The Rangers proved with the win that they would not just roll over and allow the top seed in the Eastern conference to have their way with them. According to Capitals’ head coach Bruce Boudreau, there was much more to the game than that. Boudreau told the media that he felt as though New York was head hunting against players such as Mike Green, Washington’s All Star defenseman that has a history of concussion problems. The statement was in reference to a couple of questionable hits, specifically Marc Staal’s

shot that appeared to make contact with Green’s head. There was no penalty on the play and the NHL did not rule on the hit, but it may have to step in after game four if Sunday’s game was any indication of how heated things could become.

The Rangers blew two one-goal leads and it appeared as though the game was headed to overtime before Brandon Dubinsky netted the game-winner with 1:39 to play in regulation. The goal was a reflection of the way that New York adjusted its offense after scoring just a single marker through the first two games of the series. Dubinsky’s shot bounced off Capitals’ defenseman Karl Alzner, hit goalie Michal Neuvirth, and then deflected off Alex Ovechkin and in. It wasn’t pretty, but if a lack of highlight-reel goals means more ticks in the win column, the Rangers will gladly take it. New York fired 35 shots on goal in the win compared to a combined 47 in the two losses, underlining how important it will be to get shots on goal and crash the net.

Washington will need to do a better job of clearing the garbage in front of Neuvirth in game four, while at the same time making sure they emulate the Rangers’ strategy of getting to the net and causing traffic. Henrik Lundqvist was once again New York’s most valuable player in game four with 24 stops, but many feel as though he wasn’t tested enough. The Rangers’ powerplay helped make a difference after being held scoreless through the first two games, and if they can continue to click it will provide an obvious boost. New York will have the advantage of matching lines at home, and that will be another factor in helping them even the series as they limit the damage done by players such as Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom in front of Lundqvist.

Pick: Rangers -110
