The Boston Bruins have never come from behind to win a playoff series after falling behind 2-0 – they’ve tried and failed 33 times – but they’re certainly back in the Eastern Conference quarter-final series after beating Montreal in overtime in Game 4 to even it at 2-2.
Were the Habs the better, faster team in Game 4? Maybe. But it wasn’t enough to win. Every time they grabbed a lead, the Bruins struck back. Montreal didn’t have an answer for the size and finish of a man who once played for them: Michael Ryder. He scored two goals, including the overtime winner.
Through four games, no home team has won yet in this series. That makes it much tougher to handicap. Will the Bruins fare better this time around now that they’ve regained their confidence? Or will each team continue to crumble under the pressure at home?
Even though the Bruins looked in many bettors’ eyes like the better team on paper entering this series, we can’t write the Canadiens off just because they lost two straight at home. The Habs still have Boston’s number. They’re still 6-4 against the Bruins in 2010-11 including the regular season. They’re still 24-8 all-time in playoff series against Boston.
The Habs also seem to play better on the road for whatever reason in these playoffs. Whether they feel less pressure from their fanatical fanbase or gel better by staying in hotel rooms, something different seems to come over this team.
Also, despite the two consecutive losses, Carey Price hardly has to hang his head. He has a .928 save percentage for the series and still made some huge saves in Game 4 despite allowing five goals. He doesn’t look like a guy ready to unravel (read: Luongo, Roberto) in my eyes.
I want Boston to prove it can win on its home ice – and for Montreal to prove it can’t win on the road. In other words, I say stick with the trend until it breaks. Pick Montreal.
