Playoff Bound Kings Host Playoff Hopeful Coyotes Wednesday Night

The Kings went 11-4-0 in March and will be looking to keep the solid play going against a Coyotes team that has beaten them three straight times ahead of Wednesday night`s contest.

The Phoenix Coyotes picked precisely the wrong time to go into a funk. They have lost two straight games including one last night against the struggling Jets – the Yotes have scored a total of two goals in those two losses and now need every point to keep their names in the running for a Western Conference playoff spot.

The Coyotes offense has gone cold – just one goal in each of their last two games. Michael Boedker is about the only Coyote playing well in the offensive zone – he has four points in four games. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has one point in four games, Keith Yandle is pointless in four games and Martin Erat hasn`t registered a point in his last seven games. Phoenix faces the second stingiest defenses in the NHL Wednesday so hopes for an offensive breakout are sketchy at best.

Phoenix will be forced to play without Mike Smith between the pipes again Wednesday night but Thomas Greiss have been an adequate fill-in. He is just 0-1-1 in his last two starts but has a good 1.45 GAA and .941 save percentage over that span. He is doing his part – unfortunately the Coyotes offense isn`t doing theirs.

The Los Angeles Kings are ramping up for what they hope is a long playoff run. They had won six straight games before coughing up the lead in the third period Monday against Minnesota and eventually losing 3-2.

Not surprisingly for the Kings it has been defense and goaltending that has carried them to their fifth straight postseason berth. The team surrenders just 2.08 goals per game and Jonathan Quick is 5-0-1 with a 1.95 GA in his last six starts overall. Quick, like the rest of the Kings has struggled against Phoenix as of late however – he has a 3.69 GAA in his last three starts against the Coyotes.

LA`s offense has been average this season – 2.41 goals for per game. Alec Martinez has a point in four of his past five games and 12 of 15, Marian Gaborik has a goal and four assists during a four-game point streak, Willie Mitchell has three points in two games, Justin Williams has two points in two games and Tyler Toffoli has four points in five games. Absent from the Hot List are Jeff Carter, Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Mike Richards who are all capable of changing a game at any time.

A few trends to consider:
• Under is 8-3 in PHO last 11 vs. Western Conference.
• Under is 15-7-1 in PHO last 23 overall.
• Under is 18-5-5 in LA last 28 vs. Pacific.
• LA are 19-7 in their last 26 Wed. games.
• Under is 15-6-6 in LA last 27 Wed. games.
• Home team is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.
• PHO are 3-8 in the last 11 meetings in Los Angeles.

The Phoenix Coyotes have played the Kings tough this season but have just three wins in their last 11 games at Staples Center. Add in the fact that they have struggled to score goals and now are tasked with facing the second best defensive club in the game and this looks very much like an LA win here. The Coyotes played last night while the Kings were at home watching in comfort. Take the home team to add to Phoenix`s discomfort level Wednesday night!

Pick: LA Kings -171
