The fifth and sixth place teams in the Eastern Conference meet on Tuesday night in a matchup of teams that suddenly seem vulnerable in their quest to lock up an Eastern Conference playoff spot. It was only two weeks ago that Philadelphia and Ottawa seemed like shoe ins for the post season; that was before injury and poor play entered their team’s reality.

The Philadelphia Flyers have had a bad week to say the least. They have lost two straight games as part of a 4-4-1 stretch over their past 10 games. If dealing with the loss of their starting goaltender Michael Leighton wasn’t enough for a team battling to stay afloat in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, the Flyers learned that they would be forced to play without their best player Jeff Carter, who broke his ankle and will be out of the lineup for up to four weeks.

Three of the Flyers’ next four games will be against teams that lay ahead of them in the Eastern Conference standings and thanks to some decent play by teams that are chasing them for a playoff spot, there is little room for error. The Flyers have 10 games left and there is every reason for them to fold up their tents and look forward to next year. It does not appear that the hockey Gods are smiling on this team right now. They are 5-17-5 in their last 27 meetings in Ottawa and will be playing a Sens team that may have gained a little swagger thanks to their win on Monday night.

The Ottawa Senators did themselves a huge favour on Monday night by beating the ultra hot Montreal Canadiens, a team that they were tied with in the standings. Their 2-0 victory acted to put a bit of breathing room between them and the hard charging Habs and it also acted to give them a bit of much needed confidence going forward. Now they head home where they have a 23-10-4 record to take on a Flyers team that will be without its best player.

The Senators offense has woken up a little bit in their past three games and it couldn’t come at a better time. Like the Flyers, the Senators have been looking over their shoulders at the teams creeping up on them in the standings. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

On Monday night the Senators finally got something that has been sadly lacking for them since the Olympic break – goaltending. Brian Elliot made 29 saves en route to a shutout on Monday night. The win was important but so was the confidence building netminding effort of Brian Elliot.

The Flyers are a beaten team. Brian Boucher will be between the pipes on Tuesday night and some call up from the American Hockey league will take Jeff Carter’s place. Not exactly confidence inspiring stuff! Ottawa is a good home team and should be smelling the blood of the wounded Flyers. I like the Senators in this one.

It is getting to be due or die time for the Flyers. Everytime they win a game or two you think they are ready to make a run towards the playoffs, only to be let down by a couple of bad losses.
