NHLers will likely breathe a sigh of relief when it’s all over, as they’ve worked their behinds off during a jam-packed December schedule. Tonight, like virtually every other night this month, has a bunch of teams in action. Let’s make picks for a game from each conference.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Buffalo Sabres

Tonight, 7:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook odds: Penguins -110, Sabres -110

The defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins are a tough opponent on any night but nothing is a sure thing in hockey betting. The Pens lost to the lowly Leafs on home ice Sunday night and Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller, the Vezina Trophy frontrunner, seems to steal a game every week.

The Pens got the better of the Sabres in Buffalo with a shootout victory, taking advantage of Buffalo’s inability to score. The Sabres’ top offensive stars – Derek Roy, Drew Stafford, Thomas Vanek – haven’t found their groove this season. Is it possible, though, that they’re turning a corner? The offense really clicked in their 5-3 road win over the Blues last Sunday.

The Pens have been sluggish of late – on home ice. They probably just got complacent since they enjoyed so many home matchups during the holiday season. On the road, they’ve taken it upon themselves to make a statement in opposing buildings, winning four straight and six of seven. Sports Betting at the SportsbookThey haven’t played a road game since Dec 19 – against these same Buffalo Sabres – and should relish the chance to travel and re-establish team chemistry. Look for the Pens to be the sharper team tonight and best the Sabres.

Pick: Penguins -110

Vancouver Canucks @ Phoenix Coyotes

Tonight, 9:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook odds: Canucks -135, Coyotes +115

Poor Phoenix. The Coyotes lead the Canucks by five points in the West standings and are 15-5-0 at home…yet they’re underdogs tonight. Sportsbook oddsmakers don’t seem to believe their hot start. There may actually be merit to that idea. The Coyotes have plenty of rising young offensive talent but that isn’t the reason for their success this season; no Phoenix player is on pace for even 60 points this season. It’s all Ilya Bryzgalov’s play in goal. While he does have outstanding career numbers against the Canucks (1.75 GAA. .940 save percentage), no one wants to play Vancouver right now.

The Canucks may be starting one of those major runs up the standings like they did last winter; they’re 7-2 in their last nine games and have scored three or more goals 10 times in 13 games this month. Henrik Sedin is playing the best hockey of his career and Roberto Luongo is in a major groove. Vancouver even marched into Calgary on the weekend and trounced a strong defensive Flames team 5-1. Now is not the time to bet against Vancouver.

Pick: Canucks -135
