The resurgent Ottawa Senators travel to Washington on Tuesday Night in a battle of the Two North American Capitols. Both teams are assured a playoff spot and both have been playing decent hockey as of late.

The Ottawa Senators have been the definition of a streaky hockey team this season. They have gone on an eleven game winning streak but have suffered through two – five game losing streaks. They are currently riding a four game winning streak and have climbed up the Eastern Conference standings to fifth in the process.

Tuesday night’s game represents a challenge for the Senators who will undoubtedly be looking to make a statement that they are capable of beating any team anywhere.

The Ottawa Senators have been getting good offensive play, and have been receiving great goaltending since the Olympic break. Daniel Alfredsson has tallied ten points over his past seven games, Jason Spezza has enjoyed a decent stretch and youngsters Erik Karlson and Peter Regin have been contributing as well. Note: The Sens will be without their top goal scorer Milan Michelek and top defensive point getter Filip Kuba on Tuesday night

As well as the Senators have looked on offense, it is the play of goaltender Brian Elliot that has propelled them to the position that they are in. Over the past four games, Elliot has a .967 goals against average and his 4-0 week is the reason why he was named the NHL First Star. Elliot is 17-6 in his last 25 starts and has created a sense of belief in Canada’s Nations Capitol.

The Washington Capitals are a ho-hum 5-3-2 in their last 10 games and appear to be riding out the rest of the regular season. They need to be careful not to slip into a slump though or they might be caught off guard in the playoffs. They have lost two straight games and were booed off the ice in their last outing – a loss against the Calgary Flames. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Still, the Caps have only lost five times on home ice all season and are only a couple of wins away from clinching their first President’s Trophy in club history.

The offense is fine in Washington – they still boast the number one overall offense and the number one power play in the NHL. The goaltending appears to be fine as well. Despite getting pulled in his last game; Jose Theodore is still 17-0-2 in his last 19 games – not too shabby for a goaltending castoff.

Tuesday night’s game should mark the return of the “Bully Capitals”. For them to lose two games in a row on home ice is unthinkable. But for some reason, I like the heavy underdog Senators and the hot play of goaltender Brian Elliot in this one. I just don’t see the focus and the intensity from the Washington Capitals right now. I like the upset!
