The Buffalo Sabres will be looking to put a disappointing effort in their last game behind them when they take on a Boston team that had a similarly unflattering result their last time out. The Buffalo Sabres are coming off a 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday – their first loss in regulation in eight games while the Bruins lost 4-1 on Tuesday in a much anticipated rematch against the Montreal Canadiens.

Buffalo continues its push toward an Eastern Conference playoff spot and suddenly find themselves controlling their own destiny. They are right in the thick of the race for eighth and have games in hand over the sixth and seventh place teams in the Conference. The Sabres are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games overall and since new owner Terry Pegula took over the team; they are an impressive 5-1-2.

Buffalo has caught fire offensively and have entered the top 10 in goals for – 2.8 per game. Bolstered by the unexpected play of the league’s Second Star for the week, Andrej Sekera (ten points in five games), the Sabres suddenly look like a top tier or two offense. Thomas Vanek, who should return after missing the Pittsburgh game because of the flu, has three points in two and Jason Pominville and Drew Stafford have been playing very well.

Defensively, Ryan Miller is finally starting to round into form– no wonder the Sabres have climbed the ladder. He is 4-2-2 in his last eight games with a goals against under 2.5. Against Boston this year, he is 3-0-1 with a 3.17 goals against average.

The Boston Bruins forgot what made them successful for most of the season on Tuesday – physical play. Except for one play (ya that’s you Mr. Chara!); the Bruins left their muscle in the locker room. The chances of that happening twice in two games are slim at best.

The line of Lucic, Krejci and Horton continue their torrid pace and have the Bruins 5th ranked in the NHL with 3.0 goals per game. Mark Recchi, Michael Ryder and Tomas Kaberle have been invisible but when they snap out of their slump, Boston will be a force!

For some reason, Boston opted to go with Tuukka Rask in their last game which turned out to be a mistake. Expect goals against leader Tim Thomas to be back between the pipes on Thursday – he is 3-0-1 in his last three games with a 1.49 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Buffalo Sabres have been good on the road this season and the Bruins have been surprisingly average at home. I expect both teams to come out flying in this contest but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bruins are a tad tentative after the Chara/Pacioretty incident. With controversy surrounding the Bruins, look for the Sabres to steal this one!
